What the gurus are saying

These melts earn consistent praise for delivering a gentle yet thorough cleanse without stripping the skin, and dermatologists and estheticians highlight the fragrance-free hyaluronic acid and retinol options as particularly useful for sensitive skin and travel. The retinol version offers short contact therapy, which may suit those who have not tolerated retinol well before, though it is worth being cautious around the eyes. Multiple reviewers rotate between formulas by season, preferring the hydrating hyaluronic acid or retinol in colder months and vitamin C in warmer weather.

"It's hard to bring a good facial cleanser on vacation because they come in bigger bottles and are hard to get through if you're not checking a bag, so when I travel I always bring with me the Olay cleansing melts. They feel like a little piece of fabric, but when you get them wet they immediately dissolve and melt in your hand."

Girl, Wash Your Face — The Right Way to Cleanse
"The Olay Cleansing Melts are a little fiber towel, and when you put water on them they completely dissolve in the palm of your hand and lather really well. It's a fun experience when it comes to washing your face. I love these in particular for travel because I don't have to worry about a small bottle not lasting the whole trip, since they're not liquid. They have a retinol version, but I don't know that it's really going to deliver the retinol, you should still use a separate retinol. The vitamin C one is my favorite, it's got a nice fragrance and I'm not allergic to fragrance, and they also have a fragrance-free hyaluronic acid one that's really moisturizing. If you haven't tried them, I highly recommend trying them just because the experience is actually really fun and they do a great job."

Products a Dermatologist Actually Uses
"I use the Olay Cleansing Melt as my cleanser in the shower. If you haven't tried these, I highly recommend them, it's a fun experience, a new way to cleanse your face instead of a gel or foaming cleanser. It's like a cotton pad but when you wet it, it completely dissolves in your hand and creates a really nice lather. This is not sponsored, but I use them all the time and they're super convenient for travel since you don't have to worry about liquids with TSA, and they come in a resealable pouch that makes it easy to travel."
Dermatologist Reviews: Olay Cleansing Melts
"I've been using the Olay cleansing melts pretty consistently for four to six weeks now. I was worried about the intensity of the lather leading to dryness or irritation, but I found none of that in my experience. I do feel like it gives me a great deep clean and leaves me feeling clean all day. A box of thirty two cleansing melts costs nine ninety nine, which breaks down to about thirty three cents a day, and I think that's actually a pretty decent price for something this novel. I will always make sure these are in my bathroom because I love using them, and I can't imagine anybody using these and not loving the user experience."

"I love that they have a fragrance free one with hyaluronic acid. I think these would be great for travel. Retinol can be deposited on your skin from a wash through the process known as coacervation, any active can be deposited on the skin. For those of you who have really sensitive skin and haven't tolerated retinol, you might try it in a facial cleanser and take advantage of the short contact therapy approach. Be careful using this around the eyes though, it can be irritating to eyelid skin."

"I love these Olay cleansing melts. It's a solid balm, you wet it, it dissolves, and you cleanse with it. You should be using a gentle cleanser no matter your age but especially after 40 because your skin shouldn't feel squeaky clean after cleansing, that can do more harm than good since skin already produces less oil as we age and it can get dehydrated. I like the hyaluronic acid ones and the retinol ones, and I like the vitamin C ones too, but I could really only use those when it was warm out."

These Skincare Products are Going in the TRASH!
"These cleansing melts are little tiny, but they're water activated. So you stick it in your hand, you stick your hand underneath the water, and as it gets wet, it gets activated. You rub your hands together and you get enough. It's a single use, but you get a whole bunch of them in here. I love these. My favorites are the hyaluronic acid and the retinol. They're both fragrance-free. They feel really amazing on my skin."

LOW Anxiety Skincare Routine for Dummies 2025
"It's not classified as a deep cleanser. When you use it, your skin doesn't feel stripped; your skin just feels okay, I'm ready. As soon as the Olay Cleansing Melts came out in 2024 and I was using it beforehand because I had a campaign with Olay so they gave it to me a little bit before it hit the market, I have only been using the Cleansing Melt from that point on."
Summer Skincare for the SWEATY AF! (Comprehensive Guide)
"I have been using these Olay Cleansing Melts for at least since April or at least 2 months before it came to Market as part of a campaign and let me tell you something I am obsessed. I love this it feels so amazing on my skin my skin feels like a baby's bottom after I'm done with it. You can also double cleanse with this, you know just use another one again after you have used the first one to remove your makeup. I use them every day but they're also amazing for travel. They come in retinol hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. The retinol and hyaluronic acid are both fragrance-free I find those to be the ones that I could use most times of the year especially in the winter time but I've been using them during the summer as well."
My Current AM & PM Skincare Routine + Makeup (DETAILED with Timestamps)
"I've been using these Olay Cleansing Melts for I don't even know how long, maybe I got these in like March or April or something, maybe even earlier than that this year. I'm obsessed with these things. So these are the hyaluronic ones. They also come in retinol, they also have a vitamin C. The hyaluronic and the retinol 24 are also fragrance free if you know, in case you was wondering. You activate them with water. Look at that lather. I do this first cleanse which is going to remove the makeup. At first cleanse it does remove a lot of makeup, but you know we still got makeup around the hairline and a little bit in the eye, so we're just going to cleanse again. I like that my skin feels supple and not like squeaky clean after washing it, because if your skin is feeling squeaky clean after cleansing, there's a chance you're using the wrong cleanser."

You should be using a gentle cleanser no matter your age but especially after 40 because your skin shouldn't feel squeaky clean after cleansing, that can do more harm than good since skin already produces less oil as we age and it can get dehydrated. What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.
