What the gurus are saying

This primer makes makeup sit flat and grip nicely on dry skin, and reviewers praise how smoothly it applies and feels on the face. The main thing to know is that it does not hold makeup quite as long as some heavier-duty primers on the market, and most would not expect a full 24-hour wear. Using it just where you need it most (around the mouth, chin, or between the brows) works well, though an even application across the whole face may give the best results.

"Since I've been really flaky and dry, [...] I decided to pick this up. And actually, this works pretty good. [...] If my skin is really flaky and I want things to lay flat on the skin when I am wearing foundation and makeup, then this is a great product to use prior to your tinted product. [...] Your makeup just grips so nicely on top of this. [...] This is really affordable. [...] I don't overdo it with this product, I just use a little bit. I tried this all over the face one time, and then the second time [...] I just used it in those drier areas like around my mouth, my chin, and maybe in between my brows, and my makeup applied really nicely like that as well. So it's probably better to apply this all over the face for an even application, but I did use this as a spot application and my foundation and makeup still looked really good."

"NYX Base Glue is the tackiest primer I've ever tried."

"I just thought this was adorable little Elmer's Glue kind of looking thing. It is a primer that is supposed to grip your makeup and make it last longer and sadly what I found was putting the makeup on over this it made it look worse and it made it last less long so this was kind of an epic fail for me."

"The primer sure didn't help it. Everywhere that I put on the primer it looks twice as bad as it does on the non-primer side. I had powdered it this morning with the morphe powder that I wasn't impressed with either because it just made everything look a little bit cakey and not great, and it didn't keep the shine from the makeup from coming through."

"I actually love how this applied and how it felt. I don't think it's as gripping or as longwearing as say the e.l.f. gripping primer is, and I don't think that this is 24-hour wear. [...] The finish of these looked really nice on my skin. [...] It had that slight bit of glow, but I feel like a lot of primers and setting sprays kind of do that as well. [...] I'm not saying these are bad products at all. I just don't think they're the most long-wearing primer and setting spray combo I've ever tried."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
