What the gurus are saying

Gurus split sharply on safety and efficacy. Proponents cite clinical trials on the final formulation and recommend it as a first-line option before invasive treatments. Critics raise a significant concern: a 2024 case report documented severe liver damage linked to Nutrifol's multiple ingredients, with recovery only after stopping the supplement. The other major complaint is that supplements cannot help everyone, especially those whose hair loss stems from circulation or genetics rather than nutritional gaps. Efficacy remains contested, with weak general evidence despite some formulation-specific trials.

"There was actually a case report at the end of 2024 of a patient who developed extreme liver damage on Nutrifol and her liver healed, went back to normal once she stopped, and her doctor pointed out that Nutrifol has multiple ingredients that could be damaging to the liver. Maybe one or two of those ingredients in an otherwise healthy person at a small dose would be fine, but when you have multiple ingredients, multiple hits to the liver, and a pretty much otherwise healthy person, it tips things over the edge and can cause liver damage. The authors who took care of this patient and wrote up her case suggested that patients who are taking this dietary supplement should actually undergo monitoring of liver function to make sure that they are not having some kind of adverse event. But Nutrifol isn't going to tell you that, Nutrifol isn't going to say this supplement may cause liver injury. They're not required to disclose that to you. In contrast, Tylenol, which definitely can damage the liver if taken inappropriately, is going to have a warning on it. Nutrifol is going to appear to all intents and purposes to be safe, to be natural, great for hair growth, even though the evidence on that is super weak with no real established efficacy data."

"If you are going to go the supplement route pick a supplement that has been vetted and has gone through clinical trials. The two hair growth supplements that I recommend the most in my practice are Nutrifol and Viviscal. To my knowledge these two supplements have not been compared head-to-head but they both have clinical trials showing successful hair growth when taking them for six months or more."

"I've used Nutrifol for a long time, I used it for years, I didn't see any difference with me whatsoever. And the reason is because my problem isn't the nutrients. I'm a holistic nutrition and health coach, my nutrients are pretty spot on. The problem with me is the circulation. So if I already have a diet that is spot on and I already have adequate amounts of collagen, I have adequate amounts of biotin, I have adequate amounts of iron, I could do all of that and still not have hair growth because I don't have the circulation that's bringing it there. I could be taking these pills every single day for hair growth, I'm already getting that with my own vitamin line. For me it was like why am I taking this extra vitamin that's not my problem? My problem isn't that I'm lacking vitamins, my problem is that I'm genetically I don't have a long growth phase."

"When I first started looking into this brand Nutrifol, I wanted to see what is the quality of the evidence and the gold standard is are there clinical trials on the final formulations and not just the ingredient. A lot of studies we might go through are just looking at one ingredient, when we have Nutrifol studies they're looking at the final formulation and the efficacy behind it. There's bias when it comes to any kind of experiment or clinical trial, and so what kind of evidence is backing Nutrifol? Here we're talking about double blinded randomized placebo controlled studies where we're having these trials conducted by researchers that are blinded to whether using the Nutrifol supplement or a placebo, and that's to minimize bias and thus ensure that the results of these studies are reliable. That's one of the reasons why I will recommend Nutrifol."

"One of the reasons why I will recommend Nutrifol over other supplements is because of that reliable clinical trials that will go through looking at the formulations through a double blinded randomized placebo controlled trial, so there's that evidence-based approach."

"I like Nutrifol because we're addressing multiple potential causes of your hair thinning with these supplements. They customize it to either men or women, and they've customized their women supplements to either mature users or premenopausal females. I love that they've customized it and they're trying to address multiple root causes. This is the brand that I've been recommending to my patients the most and for the longest. I talk about Nutrifol nearly every day with my patients who come in with these hair thinning issues. I really do recommend Nutrifol, especially when it's backed by science and data."
