What the gurus are saying

Dermatologists widely recommend Nutrafol for its evidence-based ingredient profile and clinical studies, particularly for stress-related and postpartum hair loss. The main consensus praise centers on the proprietary blend of marine collagen, ashwagandha, and DHT-blocking saw palmetto. Key recurring complaints are high cost, large pill size (four daily), need for 4-6 months of consistent use, and unproven efficacy without underlying nutrient deficiency. A notable split emerges on pregnancy and breastfeeding safety due to saw palmetto content. Some skeptics question whether results exceed placebo effect and multivitamin alternatives.

"There are a few vitamin supplements that I recommend to my patients if they ask me for recommendations that can potentially support their hair regrowth journey and that's Nutrafol and the Viviscal. Both of those do contain biotin but it's not the biotin that's actually helping. It's their proprietary blend of active ingredients that is supporting that hair regrowth."

"Depending on the type of hair loss you have you may only need to take it for a certain amount of time, but for more progressive hair loss like androgenetic hair loss it definitely is more of a long-term treatment so it can get pricey. But yeah, of all the hair loss supplements out there, Nutrafol is definitely one of the few brands I recommend."

Dermatologist Compares Nutrafol & Viviscal
"Nutrafol launched in 2016 and has gained popularity much more quickly over the past few years amongst consumers and dermatologists alike. Nutrafol contains 21 ingredients that make up their trademark Cynatine complex, which is essentially a blend of phytoactive, plant-derived ingredients that have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and stress-adaptogens as well as DHT-inhibiting effects. Some of the ingredients you can find within their complex include curcumin, the main phytoactive from turmeric, and ashwagandha, to name a few. Nutrafol also contains amino acids, marine collagen, hyaluronic acid, and a few other vitamins and minerals that all make up those 21 ingredients. Nutrafol can help those who are undergoing a lot of stress-related hair loss and has been mostly studied in the context of improving androgenetic hair thinning, but because of all those antioxidants and adaptogens it could possibly improve stress-related hair loss."
Dermatologist Compares Nutrafol & Viviscal
"Nutrafol tends to work a little bit better, especially in patients that I have tried both. The feedback from my Dermatology colleagues and their patients is that it may be helpful for supporting hair growth and stress-related situations such as postpartum hair loss, hair loss after surgery, major illnesses, or COVID. Nutrafol does have a postpartum line that per their website is safe to take during lactation. Keep in mind that supplements do have side effects, especially if you are a nursing mom, so you want to first discuss with your provider. Unfortunately, Nutrafol is more expensive now, and depending on the type of hair loss you're addressing, this can get pretty expensive, especially for androgenetic hair loss where you know there is no cure and it is a chronic condition."

"I do not like any supplements with biotin so I try to take supplements that do not have biotin. You can even try prenatal vitamins in addition to, for example, the vegan Nutrafol, which is my preferred type of Nutrafol if you're going to go down that route."

"I switched to Nutrafol because it not only had those basic vitamins that we need, but they also offered anti-inflammatory benefits that help with the stress hormones being released throughout your body. I originally went for the original Nutrafol and then switched to the vegan one because the pills are smaller. I have been consistent with Nutrafol. I had a pill box where I actually put them in, it's like a ritual every Sunday, and I just have been taking it twice a day."

"It's a natural solution to promote hair growth that patients swear by. The company itself has shown results through their own studies, but don't underestimate placebo in helping yourself, especially when it comes to hair. Nutrafol helps with hormonal imbalance, inflammation, oxidative stress, and nutritional deficiencies because it's a multivitamin. If you're going to take Nutrafol, be careful I'm taking a multivitamin as well because you don't want to overdose on vitamin A or vitamin D. The trick to this is being very consistent with it over six months, which sucks because it's expensive. That is the reality, and you're not going to grow hair elsewhere on your body that doesn't happen."

"Nutrafol is definitely one you've seen more for, but because of the inclusion of an ingredient called saw palmetto in their Syneren complex, this is generally thought to be unsafe during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. The risk in pregnancy is much stronger because it inhibits DHT and that would inhibit hormones and fetal development. Breastfeeding, the risk of absorption and passing on is probably a lot less, but it's still probably something you should avoid. Nutrafol does have more studies in general, but because of the ingredient profile, it comes out as less ideal in the postpartum period."

"There were two products that really stood out that were pretty evidence-based to me that I feel like did everything you could ask for from using evidence-based ingredients to using good formulations to doing their own clinical studies to prove that they worked. I think the research is there."

"If you want to throw in some supplements like Nutrafol or Viviscal, I'm okay with that too. The more things you can combine, the better results."

"Nutrafol has hydrolyzed Marine collagen, one of the key ingredients. Studies have shown that Marine collagen supplements can increase the growth of terminal and vellus hairs, so thick hairs and the baby hairs. It can also increase the diameter of terminal and vellus hairs as well as decrease hair loss. It also has Apple polyphenols as well as ashwagandha, shatavari, saw palmetto, cumin, and a whole host of different vitamins and minerals including A, C, D and E, B vitamins including biotin, iodine, selenium, and zinc. You have to take four pills a day."

"The research for them in the absence of a true nutrient deficiency is pretty weak, and whether or not they're actually going to make a difference is really hard to say. The research just doesn't support that. I think a lot of people recommend supplements like Nutrafol because honestly I think a lot of it boils down to wanting to be able to offer something, but it's a slippery slope when there is such limited research behind these formulations. The other thing I will strongly caution against is biotin supplementation, which is often in these hair growth supplements. Biotin supplementation in the absence of a true biotin deficiency, which by the way is very rare, biotin supplements have not been shown to actually help with hair growth. The problem with biotin supplements is that they can interfere with the accuracy of blood work, and this can become very problematic for you."

"I actually take Nutrafol every day to treat my thinning hair. Nutrafol has now released vegan Nutrafol for women. Instead of containing animal-based collagen, it works to stimulate your body's own natural collagen using Maldavian dragon head, and this has been clinically shown to promote your body to synthesize collagen. Vegan Nutrafol also contains amino acids and minerals to add additional nutritional support for those of you who are on a plant-based diet. Like other Nutrafol products, it can take many months, four maybe six months, to see a result from this treatment, so you really have to be patient. I've heard from many many patients who swear by their Nutrafol, and I definitely recommend combining an oral supplement like Nutrafol with other modalities and topical treatments like low light laser therapy and serums."

"Something I like about Nutrafol and Viviscal and the reason I tend to recommend those two brands to my patients is because they have done clinical testing to show that their supplementation is actually effective for hair growth. So it's not just theoretical, but the people who have taken these supplements have actually seen benefits in their hair. If you decide that you want to use a supplement to help with your hair growth journey, you want to make sure you're choosing from a brand that has clinical data to support their claims."

Proven Treatments for Hair Thinning & Loss Besides Minoxidil | Dr. Sam Ellis
"Nutrafol has done several internal clinical trials to show that their product actually does help with hair density and growth. Their ingredient blend is proprietary to them, but really the heavy hitters within their formulation are the marine collagen that they have, the ashwagandha, and saw palmetto, which is a DHT blocker. I've had many patients over the years have success with Nutrafol. I've also had patients over the years who didn't find it helpful. So, it's something that may be worth trying. The biggest downside of Nutrafol is that the pills are huge and you have to take four a day. And if you're someone where that's just one of the many supplements or other things you take, maybe it's not a big deal. But I feel like that is a dealbreaker for a lot of my patients."

Top 6 Beauty Investments For Fuller Hair and More | Dr. Sam Ellis
"Nutrafol is a hair supplement that I've been recommending to my patients for years as a dermatologist to help with hair density and to help decrease hair shedding because it has been shown to do both of those things. It has really helped with my hair density. Before, if I would pull my hair back, there was really nothing going on, and now I have all this increased thickness, which just makes me feel a whole lot better, especially if I'm wearing my hair back. I really like that this is drug-free because I respect that not everyone wants to use a pharmaceutical intervention when it comes to their hair issues. As a dermatologist and someone who doesn't want to be wasting time or money on something that doesn't work, I really like that Nutrafol has done the clinical trials to prove its efficacy. When you have issues with your hair and you see it fall out and see that pile near the drain, it is so distressing. When I got to see that hair shedding start to slow down and to see that thickness really come in, I knew this is my supplement. I would recommend at least six months of Nutrafol because nothing when it comes to hair happens quickly and you need to really stick with it."
