What the gurus are saying

This serum delivers actual retinol despite the "bio" label, which usually signals a gentler alternative, and reviewers praise its surprisingly watery texture and multi-tasking formula. The retinol sits fairly far down the ingredient list, which may appeal to those new to the active or with sensitive skin, though it means gentler results than a powerhouse retinol serum. Some found it takes adjustment at first, and others report it works particularly well on oily zones when applied strategically to problem areas rather than the whole face.

"This is the bio retinol. When companies put some kind of prefix on the word retinol they usually mean it's a retinol alternative, but this actually does contain retinol, it also has ten percent niacinamide, salicylic acid, and copper tripeptide, which is why it's blue. I had a very difficult time adjusting to it at first, I was even layering other actives on top of it before I realized it actually contained retinol, but my skin eventually did get used to it. The texture is surprisingly watery. In the end I have to say I'm very impressed with this, it's something completely different from what you'd find on Sephora shelves, though I don't understand the brand's claim that this is a blue retinol as opposed to a yellow one."

"It's very liquidy, so this one would be pretty easy to fit into most routines. It's got eggplant, which I have a feeling is probably where the color comes from. Otherwise, very nice and liquidy, but it doesn't pack a whole punch for retinol because the retinol is pretty far down. But it's got other good strong antioxidants in here, which might make it good for sensitive skin or skin that hasn't used retinol before. It's got ginseng in there as well, which is nice. And Centella, all those goodies. I'm really bummed by the nozzle on this one, though. That's kind of the biggest bummer. It smells like squash or zucchini or something like that. It's a weird, interesting unique smell."

"I've really been finding myself doing a lot more is actually just applying this to my T-zone because I'm finding that it's actually helping a lot more with the oil that I'm getting there. I'm just not getting that kind of oil production in my U zone. This area is still dry and dehydrated. I do think that it is a good pore refining serum. I think it's a good niacinamide serum."
