What the gurus are saying

Quick-drying and lightweight, this essence-texture sunscreen earns praise for how easily it spreads and absorbs without feeling heavy. It delivers PA++++ protection and is water resistant, with reviewers noting it's gentle around the eyes. The formula does contain fragrance that lingers noticeably, though neither found it problematic or eye-irritating. A low molecular weight alcohol contributes to the fast-absorbing, serum-like finish.

"It spreads really nicely it dries down quickly"

"I went ahead and ordered the Nivea UV Deep Protect and Care Essence SPF 50 plus, it has a PA rating of four plus, and I have always loved these Nivea sunscreens. I kind of like the packaging, it comes out as a yellowish white cream, it does have a fragrance to it, but it's got that nice lightweight watery gel consistency and this one seems even more quick dry than some of the older formulations. So far it's pretty easy around the eyes and I really like the finish, though it's a little shiny at first, that'll probably dry down a bit. It's wearing pretty well after an hour and a half, and it is water resistant. I wish it didn't have this fragrance, because the fragrance definitely does linger, though it's not headache inducing and I've not had any issues with it causing blurry eyes. It does have a low molecular weight alcohol denaturant in it, which isn't the devil, it just makes for a more fast absorbing quick dry formula with a nice lightweight texture, almost like a thicker serum consistency."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
