What the gurus are saying

This fluid left gurus baffled by its purpose and bothered by its greasy texture, making it a disappointment on both fronts. The product sits awkwardly between serum and makeup without making a clear case for why anyone would choose it over something more straightforward and effective. The consensus is that it simply doesn't justify its place in a routine.

"This is their Photography Fluid, they have different strengths of it or different coverage, and I didn't love it. I just found this one to be kind of greasy. This is kind of what started NIOD off, the main founder was really looking for something to use in photography to even out skin tone and things like that, and this is kind of what his pet project was, but I didn't like it."

"The Photography Fluid—to me is basically like a serum makeup. Photography Fluid—like what does it do? Does it take pictures of me? No, okay, please explain. This is an absolute no from me."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
