What the gurus are saying

Does niacinamide serum soothe or sting? Experts split, and the dose is the whole argument. One camp loves it as a hydrating, tone-evening starter ingredient that very few people react to, and finds ten percent fantastic while twenty can get irritating. The other camp sees patients with contact dermatitis from higher-strength serums, and warns the inflammation can leave dark spots that may even be permanent. If you try it, start at ten percent.

"Niacinamide is a beautiful ingredient that hydrates the skin, gives an even tone, nourishes, and takes care of free radicals. It's overrated? No, I love niacinamide. My go-to is 10 to 20 percent. Twenty can get a bit irritating, but ten is fantastic. It's a good starter ingredient because very rarely do people not tolerate it."

"I'm seeing this all the time. Many of my patients are getting contact dermatitis from niacinamide serums at higher doses. Definitely an irritant. And when we cause more inflammation, we're just getting melanin being spilled all over the place. When we have inflammation causing fireworks in our skin it's going to leave dark spots that may even be permanent depending on how bad the contact dermatitis was. So niacinamide serums we're going to have to cut."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.
