What they flagged

  • Prone to skipping areas, needs multiple passes

What the gurus are saying

Inconsistent coverage proved this stick sunscreen's main challenge: some applications successfully reached labeled SPF after multiple passes, while others left visible gaps around the eyes and nose. When application worked out, reviewers loved the lack of white cast and how the formula didn't clump in facial hair, making reapplication genuinely convenient for outdoor activities and frequent touchups.

"The original Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Stick had a weird gap missing on the nose bridge and big chunks around the eyes on one test, but overall it wasn't super bad. On another test day it went the other way and was actually pretty good, with just a few bits missing around the eyes, nose, and mouth. It was one of two Neutrogena sticks where four passes actually worked to reach the labeled SPF amount. This version has since been discontinued."

"The thing I'm taking with me on the hike is the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Stick. It's really easy to take with me and reapply, and I need to cover my head, my ears, and the back of my neck, so I'm pretty liberal with it. I do like this sunscreen because it doesn't leave me any white cast. It's a chemical sunscreen and it doesn't clump up in my facial hair."
✓Yay
"Neutrogena also has a new sunscreen stick. I really enjoy their sunscreen sticks because they give you a pretty large surface area, kind of like a deodorant. [...] They're super helpful for reapplying on children who tend to be wiggly, [...] they're handy for on the go, but they are prone to skip areas so make sure you're doing multiple passes with these."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
