What the gurus are saying

The salicylic acid works, but the grapefruit fragrance is the sticking point. One dermatologist warns that added fragrance is a common irritant on already-inflamed acne skin, especially alongside retinoids, and recommends skipping it for a fragrance-free salicylic acid cleanser instead. Another creator loves the energizing scent and says it works well, though she notes people with sensitive oily skin should avoid it. A third found it left skin dry, irritated and stripped. Those with fragrance tolerance and non-sensitive skin may see results, but the irritation risk is real enough that a fragrance-free alternative is worth considering.

"My problem is the grapefruit. That bright fruity scent means added fragrance, and fragrance is one of the most common causes of irritation, especially on acne prone skin that's already inflamed or already using retinoids. [...] I see this far too often in clinic, someone washing their face twice a day with a strong fragranced acne wash and then their skin gets red and more irritated, not any more clear."

"Let's say for any reason I don't see the Cetaphil cleanser and I see this on the shelf, I'm going to grab it. It does have fragrance though. It smells like grapefruit which I love, but I know that some people have oily skin that is sensitive to fragrance. If that is you, then skip this. Otherwise, I think it's very refreshing. It has a very energizing scent in the shower and it works. It completely absolutely works."

"I don't know how people's skin tolerates it. The only redeeming factor of it is that it rinses off and you're not going to spend very much time on your skin. That one was pretty terrible. I highly do not recommend anybody try it. They still have that pink grapefruit line of stuff and I don't know, maybe one or two random people in the world it works well for, I don't know, but for me it left my skin feeling very dry and irritated, itchy, and squeaky clean, almost like a stripped feeling."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.
