What the gurus are saying

These wipes remove visible makeup quickly, but that's not the same as actually removing it; experts who tested them found residue lingering on the skin that needs proper cleansing to budge. The oil content does help with stubborn eye makeup, and the fragrance-free version is the choice to make, though most experts reserve these for quick fixes rather than regular makeup removal.

"I've never liked their products. They're basic and they don't evolve with the times. The brand isn't interested in evolving with new science within skincare. Nobody really uses their wipes."

The Makeup Wipes That Caused 'Chemical Burns' - The Neutrogena Lawsuit - When Beauty Turns Ugly
"You see a lot of people complaining about their reactions to them. They are stingy. I believe this lawsuit is still going on. I do think these wipes are especially sh*t. I've used them before and they're painful."

"My issue with face wipes in general is that you're basically dragging and tugging at the delicate skin around the eyes, and instead of actually washing anything away you're just smearing dissolved makeup all over your face along with the wipe's own cleansing agents, leaving a lot of residue behind. They also tend to be loaded with preservatives and fragrance to stay shelf stable, which is the last thing you want sitting on your skin all night. Are they better than nothing in a pinch on a night you're completely exhausted? Sure, as an emergency backup go for it. But as your everyday cleanse, I would skip them and use an actual cleanser or balm or oil followed by a regular water based cleanser, because your skin will thank you if you actually clean it and rinse everything off."

"Neutrogena makeup wipes, in my opinion, some of the best out there. As far as the purpose of these, it's not any sort of skin care, it's not to wash your face, it's to remove makeup mess-ups, wipe your fingers of the makeup residue. I find them very useful in makeup application purposes. I love the fragrance-free ones."

Skincare Deals That ACTUALLY Work – Derm Picks for Smooth, Healthy Skin
"They have the makeup remover wipes, which I used to sneer at these all the time until I started experimenting with eyeliner and I realized, oh wow, they're actually really helpful for making getting rid of mistakes. I just don't consider these skin care. I mean, they don't even really market themselves that way, right? They market themselves to remove makeup, but like for removing your makeup at the end of the day, this is not going to cut it."

"They gave some of their makeup remover wipes which these work really well to quick clean your makeup brush or if you mess up your makeup. I use these but I don't use them to actively clean my face because I find that makeup wipes are not the best approach for that."

"I don't recommend using makeup wipes to actually wash your face, but I personally find them to be useful for makeup mistake correction. However, I recently got some and didn't realize I got the scented ones. Oh my gosh, the fragrance ruins the whole appeal of these makeup remover wipes because why do I want a strongly scented wipe up by my eye? I don't."

"Neutrogena makeup remover wipes really have a strong following, but I've tested out their wipes before and I just don't find that they work."

"If you're really in a pinch, a makeup removing wipe is good enough before you crash and go to bed for the evening. Neutrogena makes some great makeup removing wipes."

"Neutrogena makeup remover, these are really handy. The fragrance free version that's what you want, the one with fragrance doesn't smell very good. These are really nice. I used to just keep a pack of these on my night stand so I'd be in bed and I could still at least feel like I was removing the bulk of it. That's one of the worst things you can do for your skin is not removing your makeup and sunscreen because it gets in your pores, it's not good. So even if you don't feel good, that's the best thing you can do, is if you do nothing else do that."

"These are nice because I travel a little bit from time to time. I just use these at night and the nice thing is the towelettes are made out of plants so they're compostable. When I travel I don't like bring oil cleanser because I've had it happen more often than not where it ends up leaking everywhere so I pick these up and I just carry these with me and I just use them at night to remove my makeup and then I use a general second step cleanser and then I'm good to go. So these are pretty handy for that. And fragrance free is the one you want to get unless you don't mind fragrance then whatever."

"Neutrogena is also good, but mine is missing a stopper, and it's amazing how much of a difference that makes. I feel like I get a great deal on Neutrogena, but then I spill half the bottle."

"For eye makeup which tends to have a lot of sweat proof, crease proof type makeup, I like to use wipes that have some oil in it. The Neutrogena makeup removing wipes do have oil that helps you break makeup down faster."

"I have literally used these exact same products before, the Neutrogena makeup remover wipes removed the tough makeup for me but are they overall good for your skin? No, they're so bad. The whole thing about makeup wipes is that they're not eco-friendly, they're really just pushing makeup and dirt deeper into your pores or across your face unless you're doing something like a legit double cleanse where you're using some sort of an oil cleanser or micellar cleanser and then removing that with some sort of a treatment cleanser. A lot of that dirt and grime can just be pushed around and shoved in, and then makeup wipes don't really have a lot of things that dissolve if they did they would be too irritating. Think about like applying a cleanser with a detergent on your face, you wouldn't leave that on your face, right? Because of that, makeup wipes don't include those detergents, but some of those detergents or sulfates or those cleansing items are what actually help to break down makeup, dirt, grime and gunk. So if you don't have that in the makeup wipe, number one it just looks clean, it's not actually breaking things down, and then you're just leaving fragrance and like oils and goo on your skin."

Testing Makeup Wipes vs Double Cleansing Under a UV Light - the Truth about Makeup Wipes!
"I used to heavily rely on makeup wipes because I did not know about double cleansing. I literally have target hauls that are still live on this channel where I'm talking about the Neutrogena makeup wipes that I love so much, and I'm sitting there with a full face of breakouts because newsflash, 20-year-old Cassandra, that just wasn't working for you. When I tested them with a UV light, the residue was all around the edges of my face, especially my eyes, and it's like the makeup wasn't removed from inside my pores. The double cleanse was much better at actually getting everything off."
Skincare I Loved as a Beauty Guru but HATE as a Skinfluencer
"I was obsessed with makeup wipes, the Neutrogena makeup wipes were my jam. I will admit they are probably one of the most effective makeup wipes out there but are there ingredients any good no. Are they irritating to the skin absolutely. Are they biodegradable no. Are they chock full of fragrance like you don't even remove the makeup you're just wiping residue around your face. Why. In the words of Caroline Hirans, makeup wipes are for festivals fannies and emergencies not for regular use but oh did I use them regularly."
