  • Suits oily skin

What they flagged

  • Can feel tight despite looking hydrated
  • Strong fragrance in standard version

What the gurus are saying

The strong fragrance is what both reviewers flag as the main reservation, and anyone sensitive to scent may want to patch-test beforehand or consider alternatives. Beyond that concern, the serum genuinely earns praise for solid hydration backed by glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, sodium PCA, and other soothing ingredients, earning particular appeal for oily skin, though reviewers agree it's straightforward rather than innovative.

"Overall I'm really not opposed to the Neutrogena Hydro Boost line. I don't think it's the most innovative product out there, however they are simple, they do the job, they're effective, and a lot of people really like them. The ingredient list does have some really good ingredients: glycerin, which is great for hydration, dimethicone, a great silicone for preventing water loss, bisabolol, an amazing antioxidant ingredient, sodium PCA, great for soothing irritation, and sodium hyaluronate, which is what the Hydro Boost line is really known for. It does have fragrance in there though, and I don't love that. For now, I'm not horrified."

"The serum gives a very nice natural dewy glow without being thick or greasy, but my skin doesn't feel the way it looks. It feels a little bit tight even though it looks very nice and hydrated. So the serum is a little bit of a letdown."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
