  • Hyaluronic acid supports hydration

What they flagged

  • May sting on application
  • Can irritate deeper skin tones
  • Requires daily sunscreen after use

What the gurus are saying

Hyaluronic acid in this fragrance-free peel may enhance how deeply glycolic acid penetrates, making the 10% concentration work harder than the percentage alone would suggest. It fades sunspots and hyperpigmentation with a mild, moisturizing base, though it may sting on application, so those with deeper skin tones should patch-test first, and everyone needs sunscreen afterward since it increases sun sensitivity.

"I have one on hand from Neutrogena, the Hydro Boost Glycolic Acid 10% Peel. This is fragrance-free, and that's the other thing too when it comes to putting stuff on the lip I definitely recommend going with fragrance-free products if possible, just because we know fragrance can be a risk of irritance on the lip. And if your lip is already dry and chapped, you just want to lessen any potential allergens that may be in the product."

"Here's a product that I am rather a fan of from Neutrogena, it's their Hydro Boost Glycolic Acid Overnight Peel. It's fragrance free and it has hyaluronic acid, which actually may help enhance the penetration of the glycolic acid. Alpha hydroxy acids definitely exfoliate, they dissolve the glue between the sticky skin cells."

"This glycolic acid overnight peel from Neutrogena is pretty good if you're looking to improve the appearance of sunspots hyperpigmentation provided you tolerate it. It's a mild exfoliant and it's also in a pretty moisturizing and hydrating base with the hyaluronic acid in there. Hyaluronic acid can actually enhance penetration of glycolic acid. You want to be careful like you might look at this and be like oh 10 percent glycolic acid that's going to be, you know, you may have some idea in your head of how effective 10 percent is but with glycolic acid it's not so much the percentage but rather the formula overall because that can influence the penetration of the glycolic acid, the free acid value. So like for example the hyaluronic acid in this may make 10 percent in this formula more effective than 10 percent in another formula."

"Oh my gosh, I had no idea Neutrogena came out with this Hydro Boost Glycolic Acid Overnight Peel, fragrance free. Glycolic acid can penetrate a bit more deeply and it helps with moisture retention and improving hyperpigmentation, though if you have a deeper skin tone you have to be careful because it can be too irritating. This may sting when you put it on, so be careful and make sure you're wearing sunscreen, because it can make you a little more vulnerable to the sun."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
