What the gurus are saying

Ketoconazole in this shampoo works well enough that some gurus use it beyond the scalp, massaging it onto the body as a maintenance treatment for fungal skin issues like Tinea Versicolor, leaving it on for a few minutes before rinsing. However, because these formulas are made for the scalp, they can be harsh on facial or body skin, so daily use may not be ideal. Those wanting to try it on the body or face may want to start cautiously and ease off to once or twice weekly.

"It's called Neral Shampoo, which has an anti-yeast ingredient called ketoconazole. I would just be a little bit cautious because these shampoos are essentially made for the scalp and they could be a little bit harsh for the face. I wouldn't use them every day or maybe just focus on those areas."

"Neral anti-dandruff shampoo at 14 bucks, there's ketoconazole in it, it's an active that helps with dandruff but that has also been shown to help with your hair by inhibiting the effects of DHT on your hair follicles so minimizing their fallout. I apply it to my scalp I usually let it sit for a couple of minutes before washing it off really for that hair loss effect."

"If you have dandruff that's associated with larger flakes, eyebrows, nasal folds and scalp and you have that itch, you want to use an antifungal shampoo. One that I love is Neral, this is a ketoconazole shampoo at 1%. I even use this as a face wash and I tell patients, my husband included, but he doesn't take my advice, to apply it to your eyebrows, your nose, your nasal folds and let it sit for 5 minutes before you wash it off. When you are using it on your scalp, most people put the shampoo and rinse right away, but if you can apply it to your scalp before even going into the shower, I would apply the shampoo and massage my scalp and then go in and take a shower. That's how you should use this. It is a beautiful product. It might dry your hair a bit, but the good news is if you have dandruff and you have a really oily scalp, you might have started to experience hair loss or increased hair loss. Ketoconazole has been shown to help increase hair growth."

"I use the shampoo as a body wash to try to prevent it from coming back. I am somebody who's actually prone to Tinea Versicolor so I am on this maintenance routine about once a week when I'm doing my dandruff routine where I'm actually treating my dandruff. I take that dandruff shampoo, usually Neral, I massage it onto my body, I leave it on for 2 to 3 minutes before I wash it off and that keeps my Tinea Versicolor from coming back."

"Neral which is ketoconazole, it's an antifungal, it's helpful for seborrheic dermatitis which likewise is related to malassezia. It does not have that pesky preservative in it that people frequently become allergic to. But another thing about ketoconazole is it has anti-androgen effects, so there's interest in it topically for acne, actually for addressing the hormonal component of acne. Not like super evidence-based, but 2% ketoconazole is prescription in a cream and some people actually get good improvement in their acne when using that. You could try this as a face wash."
