    What the gurus are saying

The watery, lightweight texture of this chemical sunscreen earns strong praise for clean application and sun protection, though testing painted a decidedly mixed picture, some found it protective against radiation and pollution and loved how it applies, while others gave it assessments as low as 3 out of 10. The $26 price tag struck reviewers as fair for the lightweight formulation.

"This one is another chemical sunscreen, by Naturium, their Sheer Reflect Antioxidant SPF 50. If you like a sheer sunscreen, it applies really well, the texture and formulation of it is really watery, very lightweight, and it protects against radiation and pollution. I really like the sunscreen, I think it's a great product. I haven't worn it for a long time though, I've really wanted to show it whenever I'm doing a video, but I've been seeing so many reviews on social media about this sunscreen, so yeah, I really really think it's a great sunscreen and you're not going to go wrong with it."

"They say it contains an innovative biofermented powder which is fused with an amino acid derivative to diffuse light and provide a soft focus finish. Though very fine, the powder can sometimes be felt. Be sure to shake well, but that sounds like a bit of a marketing spin to me. I really wish that I'd read that before I bought it. I don't like it. I think I used it twice and then I put it aside. I gave it a three out of 10 because the price was so good and some people might actually like it, but it's not for me."

"For combination skin we really have to walk this fine line of using a sunscreen that can help to control the oil in the T-Zone without clogging the pores but still be hydrating enough for the other more dry areas of the face. The Naturium Sheer Reflect Antioxidant SPF 50 does this very well because of the additional ingredients in the formula. It's PA plus plus plus."

"There are biofermented powders in it that give it that nice soft focus semi-matte kind of natural look to your skin. It also just kind of gives you this filtered look to your skin. There's always a possibility of pilling whenever you're dealing with powders in a sunscreen, but we really try to get ahead of that as much as we possibly could while using powders in a sunscreen, so I think we achieved that really nicely. The thing I'm most proud of is the texture of this sunscreen. I feel like this is a sunscreen that everybody could really love. If you do have oily skin or combination skin you can use it on its own, maybe over a hydrating serum or a vitamin C serum. If you have dry skin like me, just do your full skincare routine, finish with your moisturizer, then apply this on top and it just feels super light on your skin. It has this really nice plush serum texture to it that I just think is very unique. You can't even imagine when you're applying it that it will dry down to a soft matte finish, but it does. You have to give it a few seconds, maybe a minute, which I let my sunscreens dry down that much anyway before I apply anything else, and then you realize it just gives you this beautiful natural look to your skin and it feels like you're not wearing anything."

"This is such an amazing sunscreen and I'm so excited to finally share it with you. This is an organic filter sunscreen with chemical filters we use avobenzone, homosalate and octisalate. This is an SPF 50 sunscreen and we also went ahead and got a PA rating on this so it's PA plus plus plus, four pluses, which is the highest rating that you can get, which was really important to me because it's truly a broad spectrum sunscreen. You also get 40 minutes of water resistance in here and for those of you who have been asking this gives you a soft matte natural finish to your skin. I just think that chemical filters are superior, they're easier to formulate with so we get this elegant kind of formula and the texture of this is so beautiful. Depending on how you formulate it you can also use it on all skin tones so you don't have to worry about a chalky casty look to your skin. When it comes to actual protection of your skin we were able to just do so much more for this formulation using chemical filters."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
