"Mandelic acid might be your girl. It's a gel and because the molecule is larger, it's less likely to penetrate deeper into the skin and cause irritation. Mandelic acid is slow penetrating and gentle without causing irritation. It will fade the look of dark spots and hyperpigmentation caused by blemishes and photoaging. It also will help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles if you pair it with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. This product calms redness and hydrates while gently resurfacing the skin. The key ingredients here are mandelic acid 12%, it's a gentle AHA for exfoliation to improve fine lines, wrinkles and texture of the skin. It also contains niacinamide which will calm down the redness, strengthen the skin barrier and even up the skin tone, and hyaluronic acid of course to deeply hydrate and counteract some of the dryness you might experience while using it."

"If you're looking for a mandelic acid product, I highly recommend checking out Naturium. They have a 12% mandelic acid topical that contains 12% mandelic acid that's effective but gentle, along with niacinamide that also helps to support the skin barrier, helping with hydration and offering some anti-inflammatory benefits as well as improving dark spots at the same time. So great for those that are more acne prone, struggling with post-acne marks. It's actually one of my favorites for using on darker skin tone and that is what studies have shown too. It's actually very safe to use on darker skin tone to treat post-acne marks, acne, and improving complexion and skin texture and skin tone."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

    Source: DermNet

    Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Source: NIH, National Library of Medicine

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
