What the gurus are saying

Dermatologists flag that high-dose biotin supplements are frequently associated with acne flares, though clinical evidence remains limited. The core issue is unregulated dosing: manufacturers often load supplements with excess biotin to appear more potent, when lower amounts would suffice. High doses may also skew certain blood test results. Acne typically resolves once supplementation stops or doses drop to reasonable levels.

"Some people think that biotin can make acne worse, but there's still very limited data on that, so I don't really talk about that as much with patients."

"A lot of you guys have shared with me over the years and patients as well that they've noticed if they take biotin supplements they get acne. Now biotin is less well reported, you know, is not reported necessarily with acne but I've definitely observed it and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the biotin in these supplements is such a high amount. The dose is quite high. Again, that's a problem with supplements they're not regulated so the dosing is kind of up to their own discretion. They might put a high amount in there thinking that it will make consumers think that they're getting a better product when in reality you could be getting a more problematic product. I've also mentioned before how biotin at high doses can interfere with the accuracy of certain blood tests. So high doses of biotin whether it be by themselves or maybe are often accompanied by B12 definitely can put you down the path for an acne flare. It will clear up once you stop these or you go to a more reasonable level."
