    What the gurus are saying

This cleanser earns consistent praise for leaving skin visibly smooth and soft after a single use. The combination of chemical exfoliants (AHAs and BHAs) with gentle jojoba beads strikes a balance that works well for both facial and body exfoliation, and estheticians recommend it as a professional-grade treatment option. Those looking for a dual-acid cleanser that feels gentle rather than harsh will find this a reliable choice.

"This is made with jojoba beads, a gentle exfoliator with AHAs and BHAs, it's the Murad AHA/BHA Cleanser. It's meant for the face, but I accidentally picked it up thinking it was for the body and fell in love with it, and aestheticians I've talked to since then always recommend it for a gentle body exfoliation treatment. After you do this step, out of the shower and towel off and put your lotions on, your skin is so baby soft. It also now comes in a jumbo size, which I just picked up during Murad's 30% off sale."

"My favorite is the Murad Hydra AHA BHA Exfoliating Cleanser. This is a creamy cleanser which is meant for the face, but I use it a couple times a week for exfoliating the body. It has AHAs, BHAs, and it has jojoba beads for excellent hydration, which are biodegradable, and gives a gentle manual exfoliation. I love this product. I only need about a quarter size for the upper body and a quarter size for the lower body. It is $36, so it is a little bit more on the expensive side, but this lasts me really well and it's always on sale, especially at Ulta. If you want an excellent body exfoliator that still leaves the skin soft, gently exfoliates all those dead skin cells off, and gives you a little bit of chemical exfoliant in the process, this is my number one recommendation."

"I finished up another tube of the Murad exfoliating cleanser. This is a facial cleanser with actives. I use it on the body. Love this as a body exfoliation cleanser."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

    Source: DermNet

    Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

    Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.
