What the gurus are saying

Gurus overwhelmingly endorse minoxidil as the gold-standard over-the-counter hair loss treatment, citing robust clinical evidence and consistent results. Dermatologists frequently recommend it as one of the most effective non-prescription options available. The main caveat is that it can stimulate fine body hair growth as a side effect, and stopping use risks losing regained hair, so commitment to daily application is required.

"Medications like minoxidil have strong scientific evidence supporting their use."

"Hands down, the most effective topical treatment for thinning hair is Minoxidil. Minoxidil works by stimulating hair follicles and increasing blood flow to the scalp, which helps to encourage hair growth. For women, I typically recommend the 5% strength. There's really no reason to use the weaker 2.5% versions that are often marketed to women. Minoxidil comes in either a liquid serum or a foam, but most people find that the foam is easier to apply and better tolerated. Results don't happen overnight. It usually takes about four to six months to start seeing improvement."

"You want to make sure that you are using 5% minoxidil. If you're just like walking down the drugstore aisles, you will see that 5% minoxidil and 2% minoxidil exist. And classically, the 5% has been approved for men and the 2% has been approved for women. But the reality is 5% works better in both men and women. And 5% minoxidil is safe for both men and women. The reason the 2% exists and is approved for women is when you bump up the strength of minoxidil to 5%, although you get much better hair growth on your head, there does come with that small risk of a side effect of getting a little bit of facial hair growth. But the reality is it's usually not much facial hair growth. That can also happen with the 2%. So you might as well just get the better results. Also, the 5% is usually cheaper than the 2%."

Is This Hair Loss Treatment Right for You? | Dr. Sam Ellis
"Topical minoxidil has been around since the 1980s and now that the patent is over you can get it as a generic form from most drugstores, you can get it at Costco. The benefit of it is that it's very convenient, you can get it over the counter, it's not particularly expensive, and it's quite effective. If someone is going to be using topical minoxidil I always recommend they use the 5%. There is 2% available over the counter but 5% is so much more effective. If you're going to go through the time and effort of applying minoxidil every day you might as well go with the one that's going to work better. In rare cases someone may have side effects from 5% minoxidil but be able to tolerate 2% minoxidil and that is essentially the only case where I would recommend that lower concentration."

"If you can't see a dermatologist you can easily get topical minoxidil. This is the best studied topical treatment without a prescription that can help with pretty much all types of hair loss but predominantly androgenetic hair loss and telogen effluvium. I recommend regardless of your gender get 5%. The cheapest 5% is safe for all genders. I recommend the foam because it's just easier to use, less likely to drip and cause undesired side effects. It's also less irritating on your scalp but it can be a little more greasy. Just make sure you get the 5%. You can use it once or twice a day where you're thinning or all over if needed. Make sure you wash your hands. Make sure your pets are not licking your scalp or licking your hands because it could be potentially toxic to cats and dogs. You want to give it at least 3 to 6 months of consistent use. Some individuals can experience more aggressive shedding in the beginning. It's actually a sign that it's working because minoxidil doesn't work in everyone. There's an enzyme that converts minoxidil to the active form and we have genetic variability on how active that enzyme is."
