What the gurus are saying

Gurus consistently recommend the foam over liquid minoxidil, citing fewer irritating ingredients and better tolerability for those sensitive to propylene glycol and alcohol. Results take patience: most see initial signs around three to four months with meaningful thickening by six months, but consistent daily application is essential. The foam's ease of application and reduced risk of product running onto the face are practical advantages, though it is slightly greasier than the liquid.

"The liquid tends to be more irritating than the foam. One of the reasons for that is the liquid has propylene glycol, and a lot of people actually have an allergy to this ingredient. So if you're having a lot of itchiness and flaking from your minoxidil, transitioning from liquid to foam is an easy first step. Some people's scalp adapts to the minoxidil. When I first started using it, probably for the first few months, I did have what looked like more dandruff, more flaking, but as I continued to use the minoxidil, my scalp seemed to be able to receive it and work with it better, and all of that went away on its own. It's very hard to be consistent if you're dreading putting it on because of what it's going to make your scalp feel like or look like. So strategizing with your dermatologist using these tips should help you get better results because it's going to allow you to be more consistent."

"I've been applying the Minoxidil 5% Foam onto the top of my scalp and under my crown and it's really easy to apply. I've had zero reaction to it. After about 3 to 4 months I did start noticing that my hair was definitely thicker in the areas that I had been applying it, and this improvement actually has increased after switching to the foam. Applying Minoxidil to my scalp seems to have had the biggest effect of all of the treatments that I've been using."

"The one that I recommend is the foam. You apply the foam onto areas of thinning of your scalp and that is a scientifically proven way to help thicken the hair in those areas. Now keep in mind that all of these techniques can take many months to start seeing results, sometimes as long as four to 6 months, but these treatments do work so try to stick with it and be patient."

"Everyone should be using 5% minoxidil and preferably the foam one because it's been shown in studies to be more effective than 2% regardless of gender, but also because the foam has less irritating or allergenic ingredients than the liquid which has propylene glycol, which a lot of people do not react well to. If you can survive the format, that is the one you should be using. Minoxidil is something that you do have to use over a long period of time so it's not going to work right away. You have to give it at least 6 months to see results, maybe you'll start to see some little nubbins of hair come out at the 3 month mark. A lot of people will say do you have to use it forever, and yes, if you don't water a plant forever it would die. It's not like you're going to lose more hair than you would have already lost with normal aging."
Top Pick: minoxidil formulation

"Minoxidil comes in solution and a foam. The solution can be quite irritating for some individuals because there's propylene glycol as well as alcohol in that liquid formulation. If you find that the solution irritates your scalp, consider using the foam. The benefit of this foam is that it's less irritating. It is slightly more greasy than the liquid, but I also find it's easier to apply and you're going to have less difficulty having the liquid running down your face and getting it on your skin or other parts of your face that you may not want excessive hair growth on. It usually takes about three to six months of consistent daily use before you start to see improvements. For some individuals it may be sooner and for some individuals the result might be slower. If you are going to give a topical minoxidil a try, I recommend at least three to six months of consistent use."
