What the gurus are saying

One expert praises this PHA toner as a solid alternative to mandelic acid, noting it works well when applied to clean, dry skin before moisturizing. However, another expert cautions against using it twice daily as the packaging suggests, recommending instead one to two times a week as a mild exfoliator, and notes particular reservations for those with skin of color. That means the packaging directions may be too frequent for most people, and anyone with darker skin tones may want to patch-test carefully or consider other options first.

"If you cannot find Mandelic Acid, then you can always opt for a PHA Toner, which is Polyhydroxy Acid. Very similar to AHA but belongs to a different family. You can get the Minimalist PHA Toner. I believe it's 0.3% concentration and a 3% concentration. It's really, really good. You can use it on clean, dry face after you double cleanse, and then you moisturize after."

"I'm happy for you to use this one to two times a week as a mild chemical exfoliator but please do not use the directions on this packaging and using morning and night. This is not really a toner I think they're just misbranded and mislabeled this unintentionally but for skin of color it's just something that I wouldn't recommend."
