What the gurus are saying

This sunscreen's richness divides reviewers: some find it works well for cooler months or on the neck and chest, while others prefer it for winter rather than daily wear. The main caveat is value for money, the product is pricey and requires generous application to deliver the advertised SPF 50, which means people on a budget may find it runs out quickly.

"The Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect HD Fine Moisturizer with photolyase SPF 50 plus is more on the rich side and something that will work for me more in the cold months. I don't have a review up yet because I lost the tube while traveling, so now I have a new one and can continue testing."

"I showed you the Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect SPF 50 Plus HD Fine Moisturizer with Futurederm in my last skin care stack update, but still have not tried this one because I know from the past that it is quite rich. So not something that I will wear today. I will very much stick to my lightweight sunscreen lotions or my La Roche-Posay for other activities. I will test it in the winter and then report back."

"This is medicate, one of my favorite skincare brands, but their advanced day ultimate protect moisturizer. This is a moisturizer and sunscreen. You get 50 mil in here, so it's not a lot of product. It costs a high price point and you're going to need to use a lot of this to get the SPF 50 that the brand advertise. So, you're going to get through it really quickly. it's going to become really expensive. I don't think you need to opt for a moisturizer with SPF."

"I use the Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect sunscreen on my neck and chest. I did not love it on my face, but it has a nice, very lotion-like, elegant texture. It smells a little bit like sunscreen at first but that smell goes away, and since it was sent to me by the brand I like to use it up rather than waste it."

"I used Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect. I love this. It has a really high UVA rating, five stars means the highest UVA rating. I love this because it's really moisturizing and I get eczema, I have hay fever, very atopic skin, so I want something that's quite moisturizing. It doesn't leave a white cast, has a really elegant finish to it. I will often use this in the summer with no moisturizer underneath, whereas usually I'll moisturize throughout the winter and then put a sunscreen on. But I think that this is personally for someone with dry skin, reactive skin, it works really well for me."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
