What the gurus are saying

A hydrating, skincare-rich medium-coverage concealer, but the limited shade range skews too dark for very fair skin tones. While the formula earns praise for hydration, the lack of lighter shades and medium coverage means it's not for those wanting full coverage or very fair complexions. Best suited for deeper skin tones prioritizing hydration.

"This is the French Face Concealer in the shade Light Sand. It doesn't have a ton of pigment, it's not a particularly full coverage concealer. My biggest criticism is that I just need lighter shades, the lightest one is maybe half a shade too dark for my skin tone. I want to be obsessed with this concealer, but I need more shades that are light enough to brighten under my eyes and wear around the rest of my face. I do think the formula is quite nice, but if you're looking for a full coverage concealer, this isn't the one for you, it's much more of a medium coverage concealer."

"That's a great concealer. It's very hydrating. That's what it's made of, like 70% skincare. This is Maxine's Revenge French Face. I am hooked on it."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
