What the gurus are saying

Dermatologists recommend mandelic acid as an ideal starting exfoliant for dry and sensitive skin because it exfoliates slowly and gently without triggering pigmentation issues. The consensus is to use it at night only, since it leaves new skin exposed and vulnerable to sun damage and sensitivity the following day, making diligent morning sunscreen non-negotiable.

"The fix is to switch to lactic acid or mandelic acid or even phytic acid. These are larger molecules, they exfoliate slowly and politely without waking up your pigment cells."

"If your skin is dry and sensitive and you want to start an exfoliating acid look for something with either mandelic or lactic acid. Exfoliating acids in my opinion are best used at bedtime because your exfoliating acid is going to take off that top layer of the skin, and the new layer of skin that's underneath is very prone to sunburn and sensitivity, so making sure that it's properly protected especially with your sunscreen in the morning is going to be extremely important. If your skin is dry and sensitive, start either with a retinol or lactic or mandelic acid and alternate them nightly."
