What the gurus are saying

This foundation holds its finish all day without looking cakey or feeling overly dry, striking a balance that suits oily and combination skin well. Gurus praise how it stays exactly as applied and delivers genuine 24-hour wear, though those with very dry skin may want to focus on thorough prep beforehand, as the formula can settle into patchy areas if the base isn't well-hydrated first.

"I have a studio fix in NC27. I'm not sure if this will be my shade. Everyone wore Studio Fix at the time. Studio Fix fluid. I never really used the powder unless somebody requested it. This would have been my studio fix was in the old packaging when the pump was separate."

"This is a 24-hour matte foundation with oil control. As a person who is a little bit on the oily side, it's not ridiculously matte and it's not a ridiculously drying formula. I tend to prefer my foundations to be a little bit more on the satin side, and this is a beautiful formula. It creates a flawless base for your makeup and it stays put all day. When they say 24-hour wear, they mean it. The main reason it's described as a matte foundation with oil control is that it absolutely just stays looking exactly the way you applied it all day long. This is the foundation that I brought with me when I went to London because I knew I was going to be having long days. When I know that I need something to last and perform, this is the foundation that I choose. It has a very sort of mousey texture to it. If you are extremely dry, it may settle into certain areas, so you want to make sure that you are really taking your skin prep."

"I love this formula, I just think it's so beautiful. It wears beautifully, it doesn't feel heavy on the skin. I don't find this drying at all, and I live in a dry climate, which is nice. In terms of formula, Studio Fix is probably a little bit more on the matte side, so if you haven't tried it you might want to give it a shot."

"MAC is tried and true, I just wish that they would get their colors right. It is like darkening a little bit on the back of my hand slightly, which again is fine, it's not the end of the world."

"If you're someone who is struggling with using a brush and you don't understand why it's leaving streaks, the main reason here, MAC, I have MAC Studio Fix NC13"

"It's a classic formula, it's extremely longwearing, it looks beautiful on your skin. However, if you don't prep your skin properly it can look horrible, but that goes with any foundation, but this one especially I feel like anyone who hated this foundation is because they weren't properly prepping their skin so it just looked bad. I think it's a great formula. I'm happy to see on this list. I'm not really surprised to see on this list, but I do think that MAC has better formulas than that one."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
