What the gurus are saying

A dermatologist praises it as an effective exfoliating treatment that leaves the scalp and hair feeling clean, and suggests it works particularly well for those who rely on dry shampoo. However, another expert flagged it as potentially irritating for people with sensitive scalps, so those with a reactive scalp may want to patch-test first or use it sparingly to see how their skin responds.

"I love Living Proof's scalp exfoliator. This is a beautiful exfoliating treatment for your scalp. Especially if you're somebody who uses dry shampoo, I would highly recommend you do this like once or twice a week and your scalp feels so clean as does your hair."

"Living Proof Scalp Care Exfoliator is that blue bottle behind me in my sink over there. I use it in my sink in my shower. I use it on my scalp to help get rid of any sort of buildup or debris."

"I love this one by Living Proof, it is their Scalp Care Exfoliating Treatment. I love it because the nozzle is very easy to apply it through your scalp as you are using it and it just feels great. It is a combination of glycolic acid as well as mandelic acid to help to soften those scales, to help prevent that breakup, and to help minimize the scaling effect overall."

"This helps to cleanse and refine your scalp surface. If you're going to be using dry shampoo, you want to make sure you're getting rid of that buildup and that crud on your scalp. Even if you're not using dry shampoo, exfoliating your scalp once a week is a great thing to do. I do not love the rough exfoliators, so this is very, very smooth. It's a blend of multiple chemical exfoliants, including salicylic acid, as well as BHAs and PHAs that are going to lift off the dead cells on the surface of your scalp and help to reduce buildup and control excess oil. The applicator makes it very easy to apply, and it's something that has been a staple in my hair care routine now for over a year."

"I think I recall when that came out and it did not look the friendliest for sensitive skin scalps."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.
