What they liked

  • Lightweight and breathable on all skin types
  • Transfer resistant

What they flagged

  • Can look drying and aging near the eyes

What the gurus are saying

The blurring effect is visible even with light application, but the matte finish it creates can look aging near the eyes, especially for those who prefer a glowy aesthetic. It's lightweight, breathable, transfer-resistant, and works well across all skin types, lasting a long time. Those seeking shine might want to apply it only to the T-zone rather than the entire face.

"Thanks to the Amazon Prime kerfuffle I finally got to try out the Translucent Loose Setting Powder Ultra Blur from Laura Mercier, and I've got to admit, I see the blurring effect even as somebody who uses a very light dusting of powder."

"The Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder Ultra Blur is really lightweight and very breathable. I think it's suitable for all skin types, it'll work well in oily, combination, dry, and sensitive skin. It's also transfer resistant, so if you are going to hug somebody and you're worried about your makeup getting on their clothing, this will help with that. [...] I like it, I don't love it. [...] If I do use it, I will not apply it to my entire face, it really just goes into the oily T-zone, because if I apply it too close to my eyes, it tends to make my eyes look almost more aging. I'm just not loving the dry look; I tend to like the more glowy look. [...] This is going to last you a long time and it's going to make your makeup look amazing and be transfer free."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
