What they flagged

  • Heavily fragranced
  • Contains silicones that may irritate over time

What the gurus are saying

A soft, baby-bottom feel and a plumping gel-cream texture are the highlights, and a thicker base helps hydration last longer. The scent is the caveat that comes up most, so anyone avoiding fragrance should know this one is noticeably scented. Not everyone is sold. Some takes call it not especially unique, and others say it is not the pick on a tight budget or against other Korean brands, so the verdict stays split.

"Ray Ami is using the Laneige Water Bank Hyaluronic Cream. [...] I'm not the biggest fan of a lot of Laneige products because, like Anua, they do use fragrance and perfume in some of their formulas, not all of them, but some, which is why compared to a lot of other Korean skincare brands they've always fallen lower on the totem pole. There are just so many other options in the Korean skincare market that I feel are superior to what Laneige provides."

"The Laneige Waterbank Blue Hyaluronic Cream Moisturizer [...] was sent to me, and I like this, but it's so scented. I think there's a new version out now, I'll have to see if it's as scented as this one, but Laneige reformulates all the time."

"You get that unique scent with Laneige, you get a nice beautiful um cream kind of like hydrating gel cream texture here, it feels really nice, it feels really plumping on the skin. It's just not particularly unique, and so if you're crunched for a dollar, yeah, it's not going to be my recommendation."

"They claim that the cream can keep your skin hydrated for 100 hours. [...] The marketing here is very strong with claims about long lasting hydration for the skin. Ingredients wise, I think that the ingredients here back up those claims, maybe not a hundred hours, [...] but definitely we have a lot of humectants at play here like glycerin, Beta glucan, and of course they're using hyaluronic acid, specifically hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid."

"There's also the Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Acid Cream Moisturizer."

"I use the LANEIGE Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Acid Cream Moisturizer. I take it, rub it, and lather it all over. Literally the first time I used this, I woke up and I thought my skin was a baby's bottom, it was so soft. Because everyone's skin was so dry while we were filming, I ended up getting a bunch of their moisturizers and products for the rest of the cast, and in the trailer for hair and makeup, and everyone started using them and becoming addicted."

"This is the Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Acid Cream Moisturizer. It's a complement to the hyaluronic acid serum, using the same filtration process and fermentation with algae and hyaluronic acid, but in a thicker base, so it does impart better hydration to the skin for longer. I do like this moisturizing routine, first with the hyaluronic acid serum, now with the water cream, you're going to get a little bit longer effect from that."
~Mixed
"The Laneige Water Bank Blue cream moisturizer left my skin feeling like a baby's bottom when I first used it, it was so soft. But she's the face of the brand, so I'm not sure if I should judge this completely fairly."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
