What the gurus are saying

Gurus recommend lactic acid as a gentler exfoliating option, especially for dry and sensitive skin types. It works slowly and is less likely to trigger pigmentation concerns compared to stronger acids. The consistent advice is to use it at night, follow with diligent sunscreen in the morning since newly exposed skin is vulnerable, and alternate with other actives like retinol rather than using daily.

"The fix is to switch to lactic acid or mandelic acid or even phytic acid. These are larger molecules, they exfoliate slowly and politely without waking up your pigment cells."

"If your skin is dry and sensitive and you want to start an exfoliating acid look for something with either mandelic or lactic acid. Exfoliating acids in my opinion are best used at bedtime because your exfoliating acid is going to take off that top layer of the skin. The new layer of skin that's underneath is very prone to sunburn and sensitivity so making sure that it's properly protected especially with your sunscreen in the morning is going to be extremely important. If your skin is in the dry sensitive camp and can't tolerate a lot of things, start either with a retinol or lactic or mandelic acid and alternate them nightly."
