What the gurus are saying

Gurus consistently praise the active ingredient pairing as effective for inflammatory acne and closed comedones, with most recommending it as a spot treatment rather than an all-over application. The recurring concern is irritation, especially when combined with other actives like retinoids or exfoliants; some users report significant redness or sensitivity. A minority view flags the formula's perfume content and questions whether the salicylic acid concentration justifies the price relative to cheaper alternatives.

"One of our favorite products is the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo which has both benzoyl peroxide and lipohydroxy acid in it. These are the type of products you want to look for to actually spot treat acne."

2023's BEST Products For Acne | Doctorly Reviews
"La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo has the active ingredients of benzoyl peroxide and lipohydroxy acid. It's a spot treatment but it can be used all over the face on any acne prone skin. You just put a thin layer and it's great as a reactive treatment to help those pimples that pop up. Conversely, if you actually use it on acne prone skin it is a prophylactic treatment to help prevent acne from popping up. Effaclar Duo combines both salicylic acid, very similar to lipohydroxy acid, with your benzoyl peroxide, going to be incredible for that inflammatory type of acne. We actually have it as our number one spot treatment in the video we did reviewing spot treatments for acne, incredible product. Certainly can be used all over the face. Maybe irritating for some people, so people with some drier skin type can be a little bit irritating with both of these ingredients together."
Product We LOVE and HATE from La Roche-Posay | Doctorly Reviews
"If you have acne and you're looking to spot treat, this is a hero combination hero product for you. It has benzoyl peroxide plus lipohydroxy acid in it, and that combination is incredible, especially for spot treating acne. You can certainly use it all over the face, but again it could be irritating for a lot of people, so especially as a spot treatment, it's one of the phenomenal products from La Roche-Posay."

"I used to use the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo and I found that it packed such a powerful punch that it really destroyed acne but then left me with a kind of a red ring around that sometimes is so bad that I'd have to use a topical corticosteroid to get it to go away which you're not really supposed to use on your face."

Dermatologist Explains: How to Mix Skincare Ingredients
"if you had a benzo peroxide spot treatment say the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo with LHA plus benzoyl peroxide I would not combine that with the retinoid. I just keep that separate."
Dermatologist Reviews: The Viral La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo- is it worth the hype?
"I give this a thumbs up, it's not too irritating. My wife uses it, I use it for spot treatment. This is pure treatment in my eyes as a dermatologist. You can still incorporate this into your routine but just be careful not to mix it with another leave-on exfoliant like salicylic acid. This probably won't react with your vitamin C serums. If you want to do niacinamide serums with this, totally fine, they don't interact together. I just worry about the things that can cause a high chance of causing irritation as a leave-on product, whether it's a retinoid or a leave-on exfoliant. It's a solid product, only 30-something bucks, you can get it at your local store like Target or Amazon. This is a really nice product to consider adding to your regimen. The only downside would be if your acne is out of its league, you've got to go see a dermatologist. It's not a magic bullet."
Dermatologist Reviews: The Viral La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo- is it worth the hype?
"This is a solid product, only 30 something bucks you can get at your local store like say at Target or Amazon. It's a really nice product to consider to add to your regimen. The only downside would really be if your acne is out of its league, you've got to go see a dermatologist. It's not a magic bullet. If you have deep cystic bumps, that's something you'd need to see a dermatologist for. This is good for superficial acne, but it's a great product. I can see why it went viral because it's good to have a spot treatment in your back pocket, something that makes you feel mentally better. There's a psychological component of having acne, you want things to be sped along and not feel like there's nothing you can do about it. So if you can psychologically feel better by using this and not trying to go at it with your fingers or tools, we win. We're using these really good ingredients to help break up the dead skin cells, kill the bacteria, and hopefully get clearance."

"When I'm looking at the ingredients list, niacinamide is very high up but salicylic acid is quite low down, so I actually don't think it's that effective. You can get a nice niacinamide serum from The Ordinary or The Inky List and it'll pretty much do the same thing without irritating the skin. This is quite expensive, it's about £20, so you're paying £20 just for some niacinamide and some silicone really and very small amounts of salicylic acid. I don't know whether it's worth the money, and it's a very small amount, it's like 40 mls as well. It's a nice idea but I think that it needs more. You can't say that niacinamide is going to stop you having pigmentation; it's not a true pigmentation product."

"If you're putting perfume in it, even if it's a non-allergenic perfume, with repeated use over time, especially if you're acne prone, then you can be stimulating that inflammatory cast and you'll get more sensitivity. So I think that's the one negative take on this. For the ingredients, the salicylic acid is quite low down, so I actually don't think it's that effective. I think you can get a nice niacinamide serum from The Ordinary or The Inky List and it'll pretty much do the same thing without irritating the skin. "La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo contains 5.5% micronized benzoyl peroxide formulated in a more gentle way along with lipohydroxy acid, which is a more gentle form of salicylic acid that can also help to exfoliate. It's in a light lotion texture that's very easy to apply, absorbs very quickly with minimal residue. I do recommend spot treating one or two pimples if needed, rather than applying benzoyl peroxide all over the face, since the ingredient itself is usually of a very irritating nature and very few people will be able to tolerate that, especially if they're already using a topical retinoid. If you have one or two zits that is just really bothering you or you have important events coming up, spot treating with benzoyl peroxide can more quickly shrink them down."
