What the gurus are saying

Dermatologists praise Anthelios for its smooth application and excellent price-to-volume ratio, making it a go-to recommendation. The consistent complaint is the drying alcohol high in the ingredient list, which some find problematic on first use. A secondary concern centers on its chemical rather than mineral base, though experts agree any sunscreen used consistently beats perfect sunscreen worn rarely.

"I like L'Oréal Posay and I like their Anthelios tinted. L'Oréal Posay's Anthelios 60 is awesome, this is one of my favorite sunscreens. It rubs in so well. It is a chemical based sunscreen."

"I do find that oil-free lightweight formulations work better and are more suitable for those individuals who are prone to breakouts on the body, and some of my favorite ones are from La Roche-Posay like the Anthelios line, and actually their melted milk is one of my favorites. I find that these sunscreens are more lightweight, fast absorbing, and easier to spread."

"It's recommended by a lot of dermatologists and it's 36 pounds for 300 ml so it's actually a really good price, but the sixth ingredient here is denatured alcohol and so it is drying to the skin. Plus the chemical sunscreen, which is fine, it's just not my favorite. I tend to recommend mineral over chemical because it doesn't enter the bloodstream like chemical does. Chemical sunscreens do go into your urine, into your breast milk, which is why we recommend if you're pregnant make sure you're wearing mineral sunscreens. And also my children, I make sure I'm putting mineral on them. But actually if you had to pick between chemical and mineral, I would probably go for mineral if wearing an SPF 50 is the most important thing. So if all you can get your hands on is chemical, then wear it because that's more important than anything else. You want to make sure you're minimizing chances of skin cancer, premature aging, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation."

"The fragrance was quite strong, which some people like, but I'm not the biggest fan. It also has drying alcohol in it, which a lot of people like to avoid. With the La Roche-Posay Anthelios, which has a lot of drying alcohol high on the ingredients list, the first couple of uses felt great because alcohol in sunscreens helps it feel more lightweight on the skin, absorbs, evaporates off the skin, and helps it sink in quicker. I loved it at first. But then I noticed on day four my skin started feeling really tight. I woke up and my skin felt like I was wearing a mask, it was really tight and stiff. By day six my skin was literally flaking and was so dry. It was the accumulation of that drying alcohol constantly being reapplied. I think with the Anthelios it's one of those that's quite nice to use in the morning every other day. I wouldn't be using it as a daily one."
