What they liked

  • Sweat resistant and comfortable for outdoor activities
  • Advanced UVA protection, especially long wavelengths
  • Lightweight, thin texture that absorbs quickly

What they flagged

  • Stings and burns eyes for some people
  • Gripping texture that takes effort to blend
  • Itchiness with prolonged wear on reactive skin

What the gurus are saying

It stands out for reaching the longer UVA rays, the ones that sink deeper and can worsen dark spots, which gurus say other filters struggle to block. Reviewers praise its protection, sweat resistance and how it works under makeup, though it feels grippy. Stinging eyes and rosacea flare-ups came up in the less glowing takes, while those with very dry skin or alcohol sensitivity may want to skip it, since it contains denatured alcohol.

"For reliable protection when I'll be spending a long time outdoors, maybe at the beach or on a hike, I choose [...] the La Roche-Posay UVMune 400 SPF 50 plus. It's not lightweight like some of the others I use, you don't just apply it and forget it, but it's still reasonable and not uncomfortable to wear. It is water resistant, so it won't start running off my face the second I start sweating."

"For outdoors, anything that is sweat inducing activities, summertime, prolonged periods outdoors, I use the La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 SPF 50+ because it is sweat resistant, has a great coverage through all the UV spectrums. Amazing. And is despite being sweat resistant still comfortable to wear. It's not [...] lightweight but it is something that I can get on board with for the protection."

"The La Roche-Posay UVmune 400 is my outdoor sunscreen. It's sweat resistant, which is why I wear it to the beach, on hikes and generally in summer, and it has a great range of protection that helps keep hyperpigmentation at bay. It also works well under makeup. The price of it being sweat resistant is that you do feel you've put something on your skin."

"This is for the friends who say 'I hate sunscreen because it feels so heavy, it feels like it clogs my pores.' This truly feels like a skin care serum. It has hyaluronic acid to help hydrate the skin and niacinamide as well, which I love for those who have acne prone skin or if you have hyperpigmentation. [...] So, this is just almost a near-perfect sunscreen. It is a chemical UV filter, unlike K's which is all mineral. [...] Lightweight, breathable, and practically invisible under makeup."

Dermatologist Explains: How to Manage Hyperpigmentation/Dark Spots on the Face
"I've always loved that tint, my only critique though is it does have titanium only, no zinc, and so it's not covering longwave UVA. You want to block longwave UVA as much as possible in addition to visible light, which the iron oxide in your tinted sunscreen is going to block. The visible light outside can worsen your melasma or hyperpigmentation if your skin is a color."
Dermatologist Reviews: Rating My Medical Assistant's 20+ Year Old Skincare Routine!
"The UV Mune 400 goes after long UVA wavelengths, so it's covering broad spectrum UVA UVB, but especially the wavelengths that we worry about causing worsening hyperpigmentation. This is a really nice one. I wish the US would be able to expand their UV filters, but unfortunately we got to go to Europe and grab these. I wear it [...] every day, even [...] coming into the clinic where there's barely any windows in the dead of Seattle winter, I'm still wearing sunscreen."

"I got this in Paris when I was in Paris with La Roche-Posay to see their new thermal center. I bought this UV Immune 400. This filter is special because it blocks long wave UVA. Now UVA can be blocked by zinc oxide, but titanium dioxide is not a very good UVA blocker, especially the longer wavelengths. Zinc oxide will block UVA 1 and 2 well, whereas what we have here is a UV Immune filter that we can only get in Europe."
Dermatologist Explains: Why You Should NEVER Go Into a Tanning Bed!
"This is one of their newer sunscreens. L'Oreal has their own filter that will block long wavelength UVA, which UVA is quite stubborn. Zinc oxide covers UVA better than titanium dioxide by itself, but the long wavelength may not be covered fully a lot of times in your sunscreen. That's a sneaky one, right, that long UVA, because it can really cause hyperpigmentation, especially in skin of color, and really go down into your collagen and disrupt the collagen leading to wrinkly, saggy, crepey skin."

"Lar Roche-Posay released a mineral UV air serum SPF 50 for $43. It's a titanium dioxide zinc oxide based sunscreen designed to provide multi-daily UV protection and weightless texture as light as air. It's fragrance free and alcohol-free. [...] I'm interested in that. I don't really love a lot of mineral only sunscreens, but it looks unique and looks like it might have a little bit of tint to it. Might be a really nice option for some people."

And then other exciting ingredients, we've got vitamin A. Really nice product. I love this stuff. I've almost finished with it because it expires in I think three months. There's a little bit left. La Roche-Posay is one of the very trusted brands for sunscreen, and this is one of the most trusted and best ones I've used. On an average day I don't pick this because it's got a lot of denatured alcohol in there, which my skin doesn't love, and it's got a little bit of a smell, which I don't love either."

Beauty of Joseon New! 🆕🌞 Relief Sun Aqua Fresh Version Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++ Review
"The La Roche-Posay UV Immune 400 is probably one of the sunscreens I trust the most. This one didn't let me down either. It has a plastic squeeze bottle with a date on it, which I like. In terms of drying types of alcohol, it does not contain any of those. It also has no fragrance and no real scent. It does have green tea water in it, but I don't really notice any scent with this sunscreen at all, so I like that. The SPF is 50 plus, so 30 or above is what you want to be at on a daily basis."

"It's just going to be labeled SPF 50, but the rumor actual rumored SPF is going to be 99 with a PPD or UVA protection of 36, which is pretty good. That's PPD, persistent pigmentation darkening. So SPF is the UVB ray protection and PPD is the kind of the UVA protection and 36 is pretty high up there. So that's exciting to hear."

"This is a very strong sunscreen. I can't use it day in day out every day of my life because I find it to be a little drying. But if there's a day where it's 100 degrees out and I'm gonna be sweating and it's very sunny out, this is the one I'm going with. You can get it fragrance free. They have a fragrance free version and a fragrance version if you don't mind fragrance, and they also have a tinted version which I found to be orange. The fragrance free version is my favorite."
The Best Sunscreen Products for Each Skin Type 🌞 Hardest Working SPF's For Everyone
"So this one has eight filters total. In terms of sunscreen, this one's hardworking. It is for my sensitive skin. It's not a daily driver because my skin would start to get very dry if I use this every day in a row for many days. If I'm going to be out a lot, it's very humid, very sunny out, this is what I'm going for. But I try not to do that every day of the week. It's got vitamin E as an additional beneficial ingredient. It's a hardworking, great sunscreen."

Favorite Hard-Working Sunscreens ☀️ Ones I Trust for the Hottest, Sunniest Days
"It's not my daily go-to, but for a really hot day like today when it's 100 degrees out and super sunny, this is one I recommend. The reason why it's not my go-to for daily basis is it's got a lot of alcohol in it, which makes it feel nice, I'm wearing it right now underneath Dr. Jart BB cream, but if I wore this every single day seven days a week my skin would get very dry and irritated. I can use it three, four times a week max."

Skincare Products I'd Buy No Matter the Price (Well... Almost)
"Over the last few decades, I probably test out hundreds of sunscreens, and this is one of the few. If it's the sunniest day out and I'm going to be out the most, this is the one I'm picking because it's amazing. It's got eight filters in it: Octocrylene, Tinosorb S, Homosalate, Avobenzone, Mexoryl 400, Homosalate A+, Mexoryl XL, and Mexoryl SX. Most of those, many of those are L'Oreal patented filters. I don't use this on a day-to-day basis."
Best Winter Sunscreens 😎 SPF's that are Hydrating Enough for Cold Weather & Dry Skin
"It's amazing. It does contain a lot of denatured alcohol. It can be drying if you have dry skin and you wear it multiple days in a row. If your skin tolerates it, this is always going to be, in my opinion, one of the hardest working ones. Nothing wrong with using it during the winter if your skin tolerates it. But for me, I typically find this to be on the drying side. So I typically use it on the days I'm going to be out the most, the highest sun rays, sweaty days, things like that."

"This is their UV Immune which uses European filters in it. My first bottle didn't have this but this bottle has a little bit of graininess but no matter how hard I shake I feel a little bit of the grains. It's not a ton but it's a little bit. It's enough that I do notice the little grains in there but once I smooth it on my skin it kind of that feeling goes away."

The Best Sunscreens for Summer 2023 - High UVA Protection - Sweat Resistant - Hardest Working SPF's
"This one has eight different filters. The version I have is the fragrance-free version. It does have a decent amount of alcohol in it, which helps it dry and set quickly. So I don't typically mind it, but it's not something I'll wear like 20 days in a row because it does get a little drying. But it's water and sweat resistant and eight filters, it's amazing. I love that it's super liquidy. I really enjoy it. I picked mine up from Care2 Beauty. The website Sewing at Nature also carries this."

It has higher UVA protection, which is important for me because of my melasma. I love this stuff. This is one of the best sunscreens I think that's ever been made. It has filters that you just cannot get in the United States. It's the biggest issue, but it's not the brand's issue, it's the US issue. We need better filters."

"I think it is super cool to have a new filter, and I am really impressed by the innovation behind it. It is really good at absorbing UV for the percentage included in a sunscreen. It is even higher than avobenzone, which I have said before is pretty hectic. [...] This is roughly how MCE looks: [...] it covers longer UVA wavelengths, from 370 to 400 nanometres, and other filters don't really cover that area that well."

"UVMune 400 is a new filter that L'Oreal patented and discovered, it was like 9 years in the making. Basically what it does with that 400 [...] is it blocks long wavelength of UVA up to the 400 range, and the significance of that is we don't really have great filters that can block UVA. We know the longer the wavelength the deeper it can penetrate into the skin to cause hyperpigmentation, but also eat up collagen and basically contributes to creepiness, fine lines and wrinkles."

"It is just such a nice lightweight dry down completely type of sunscreen. Now if you have really dry skin I think it's going to be too drying for you, or if you are sensitive to denatured alcohol I would skip this one because this does have denatured alcohol in it. But for me when I'm going outside to do outdoor activities and I don't want a tinted sunscreen, this is the one I'm going for."

"I have loved so much. It's my new favorite La Roche-Posay sunscreen for the face. I also love the UVMune Sunscreen Milk, but I like the aesthetics of this a touch better. The UVMune Sunscreen Milk, however, is a little bit more what you would might describe as semi matte, demi matte. It's got a glow to it for sure, but it's not as shiny as that one is. You know, sunscreen often does make the face look shiny because it's providing this reflective surface as that film has formed."

"If you have something slowing down the evaporation of sweat, it will make you sweat more and feel overheated. [...] If you have very oily skin, this type of formulation tends to mix with your background sebum and almost dilute it out, cutting down on shine overall. One of my favorite things about it is that it doesn't burn or sting around the eyes. It's a newer sunscreen and the filter is unique in that it blocks and protects from long wave UVA, the rays that penetrate the skin pretty deeply. I've been using the cream, I also have the fluid, but honestly I haven't been using the fluid as much, I've just really been enjoying the cream. Personally I find it moisturizing and I'm able to tolerate it around my eyes."

"The La Roche-Posay UVMune 400, I find that formula moisturizing enough that I don't need a separate moisturizer with it."
SKIN CARE FAILS & FAVORITES FROM MAY 2022 😮 @DrDrayzday
"I love it, it doesn't burn or sting around the eyes, it's not too matte, not too shiny, it's moisturizing, it's not drying, it doesn't peel or ball, and it's water resistant. [...] I can easily tolerate it around the eyes, it doesn't run into my eyes and cause stinging or blurry vision. [...] The cream version is really nice in my opinion because it's pretty moisturizing, not drying or anything. [...] There's no cast, no fragrance, it's water resistant."
NEW SUNSCREENS: LA ROCHE POSAY UVMUNE 400| Dermatologist @DrDrayzday
"It looks great on the skin, there's no cast, it absorbs really quickly, it's not greasy, I love this, like I love it so much. I know they also make it in a fluid consistency but I really like the cream, I would encourage you to get the cream. It's free of fragrance and it's moisturizing without being greasy. It does have denatured alcohol in it but it's not drying at all, and it's water resistant."
Vlog: DEALING WITH FACIAL REDNESS, SEIWA JAPANESE GROCERY & CVS SHOPPING @DrDrayzday
"This is one of my favorite sunscreens. [...] It's super lightweight, it's a chemical sunscreen, and there's no cast as you can see."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
