What the gurus are saying

Absorbing instantly without any heavy feeling, this mineral sunscreen is praised for working well on oily, combination and sensitive skin, and for layering beautifully under makeup. Most gurus highlight the matte finish, though one found it actually made skin shiny and greasy. It's water resistant for 40 minutes and contains La Roche-Posay thermal spring water and silica for that lightweight feel.

"This is pure mineral sunscreen SPF 50. Water resistant up to 40 minutes, but the ultra light fluid texture literally absorbs instantly without feeling like there's anything on your skin. Plus, it's got mattifying properties. So great for oily, combination skin, especially during the summer time. Great to use on a regular basis, too, not just summer. And it also is great to wear alone or under makeup. It's pretty elegant. Really ideal for those that are oily combination or if you have sensitive skin and just want a sunscreen with more mattifying instead of dewy finish. Ingredient wise, aside from the mineral filters, it's got La Roche-Posay thermal spring water and then silica that helps provide that lightweight and mattifying feel."

Dermatologists Answer Sunscreen Questions
"For acne prone skin I think it's important to look for sunscreens that are formulated to be non-comedogenic, maybe with ingredients that are anti-inflammatory like niacinamide. I really like La Roche-Posay the Anthelios line, it's really lightweight and some of them even have mattifying properties if you're oily and acne prone."

"La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Mineral Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50 is really high SPF with a matte finish so if you're more oily or even if you're sensitive this is a really good sunscreen for you. It also protects against both UVA and UVB rays and environmental stressors. It is super lightweight texture, absorbs quickly, therefore it is perfect for layering under makeup. It contains titanium dioxide which is a physical barrier that prevents harmful UV rays from reaching your skin. It also contains the Cellox Shield Technology which combines antioxidant with some protection to defend against environmental damage and of course the La Roche-Posay thermal spring water which is rich in antioxidants to soothe and protect the skin barrier."

"I have used this one, it's very highly rated, it is a little bit on the pricier side, and I just have to be honest guys, every time I've used that sunscreen it has this finish on the skin that feels just not pleasant. Every time I've tried to use it I don't like it because it makes my skin shiny, greasy."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
