What the gurus are saying

This foundation earns consistent praise for its skin-like, natural finish that does not look heavy or settle into texture, and for its exceptional shade range with multiple undertones including olive. Gurus who have used it professionally and on many skin types find it works across dry, oily, and combination skin without clinging to dry patches or appearing thick. The reformulation made it lighter and longer-wearing than the previous version, though the shade names shifted so longtime users may need to adjust their number. One note: the darkest shade available is R2, which some gurus feel limits options for deeper skin tones.

"I brought the L'Oreal True Match because it just looks so skin-like. I mix the two because I need longevity. [...] I took the two of those foundations, mixed them on the back of my hand, and it just creates the most beautiful skin-like but longwearing base."

What's ACTUALLY in Lisa J's Makeup Bag?!
"I actually have the L'Oreal True Match Super Blendable Foundation on [...] today. This one is just a really nice [...] skin-like foundation with medium coverage. You can mattify it with powder or you can get a little bit of a glow from it if you choose not to use powder. I really love it. [...] This is such a great foundation for when I'm recommending a drugstore foundation, it's always in my top three. I feel like it's very versatile too. You can get good coverage but it's not heavy, very lightweight, very blendable. It's gorgeous."
WHOA, is this the BEST NEW Skin Tint?!
"I do love this one so much. [...] This one doesn't have any really hydrating ingredients, it [...] focuses more on a vitamin C derivative and it's supposed to be sweat proof and last up to 24 hours. [...] The shade range is 14, and it's 19.99 at Ulta."

"I love this foundation. It's one of the only foundation ranges, drugstore I mean, that has a really great range of shades that include olive undertone. They have truly made this foundation good for everyone. You have so many shades that vary in neutral, warm, cool. I just think that it is an absolutely beautiful foundation in general. It has worked on everyone I have used it on. [...] I would build and add this foundation to my kit because I just absolutely adored the way it sat on people who wanted a really natural finish but a good coverage that you could build up. It is so, so beautiful. If you have problematic skin in any way, you know, skin that may be a little bit drier in some areas, perhaps a little bit more porous, this sits so incredibly over any of that kind of texture. And you can make it as natural as you want or build it up as much as you want."

"This is actually a foundation I use, and I always talk very positively about this foundation. I really, really like this one. I actually used to use this in my professional kit sometimes for like proms because it was such a universally good foundation for so many skin types. It just goes on. It's so good. It just looks so natural on the skin but just eliminates unevenness instantly. It's just such a good foundation."

"If you're looking for drugstore, L'Oreal True Match is stunning on your type of skin. Not the serum version, the original version. The serum version is nice, too, but I haven't used that on all skin types, whereas the original I have."
The WORST Foundations I've ever used! | DON'T BUY THESE!!
"The first one is L'Oreal True Match in their original version and their serum version. This I have used on many, many people. I [...] had a bride and [...] I left my foundation palette at home from my kit, so I had to run to the nearest drugstore and buy a handful of foundations. L'Oreal True Match was the only one there with a good range of shades. [...] And I was beyond surprised at the results. [...] This foundation actually gave, in my opinion, a better finish than what I was using in my kit at the time, which was the Bobbi Brown. [...] I was so surprised that I actually bought more True Match to put in my kit because this is stunning. It looked great on everyone. It was beautiful."

"One of my favorite foundations I have in my kit, L'Oreal True Match. [...] I mean, in fact, you look at their shade range in that foundation, and it's not great. This is a full coverage foundation and you have 20 shades, and [...] the darkest you do is that R2 shade. It's not good. [...] I couldn't show up to a job, Fashion Week, for example, where some of the models have that beautiful, deep, deep skin tone and whip out that shade and be like, oh, I hope this fits."

"For my foundation, I'm going to be using the L'Oreal True Match. This was [...] actually a foundation that Nenah called out in a drugstore video where she was shopping for drugstore products. So, this is in the shade W1. I'm putting one pump of this on the back of my hand, and she applied it with her fingers, which I just don't ever do, but I'm going to try."

"I have been using this for the past week or so and while the finish isn't quite as dewy, I really like it. It has a bit more staying power too, which is also great."

"I'm using my True Match by L'Oreal, this is the tinted hydrating serum. I love it so I hated the dropper so I replaced it with a pump myself. It's quite light, it's a very light makeup. It seems to have covered up the blush pretty much, so if you already have a foundation on your skin they don't want you to put the dropper directly on. What they say to do is to apply it to the brush, put a little few drops on there and just apply it to that area."

"The drugstore foundation I'm talking about is L'Oreal True Match. This one has been a favorite of mine for many, many years. This is longer wearing, gives you better coverage, looks better on your skin, and is more hydrating, so it's a great foundation for mature skin because it doesn't settle into your wrinkles and it doesn't dry out your skin. It sits so beautifully on the skin, it covers what you want to cover but it looks natural and skin-like. It has a nice amount of light reflectiveness but it's not super shiny, it's also not matte, so it just walks that fine line of being the perfect foundation. The only snafu in the reformulation was that they changed the colors, so if you had been, like I was, N3 in the previous formula, you weren't N3 in the new one. W4 is my new shade in this, and I'm so happy with this foundation, and it is definitely a Holy Grail."

"The old L'Oreal True Match has been one of my holy grails for years now, and [...] I really like this new formulation even better than the old one. It's not as thick, it's not as heavy, and it looks just beautiful on the skin, much more natural looking. It's a great foundation. The only thing they kind of botched is that they didn't keep the colors the same, so I wore W3 in the old one and in this one I mix W3 and W4. But I love this foundation. I love how it wears, I love how it looks. It's just really great."

"I'm wearing this in shade W4 and I think this is actually a really good shade match for me. I really like this foundation. It is still a really great formula that is SD alcohol free and fragrance free, so I really love it from that standpoint, and I think it just looks beautiful on the skin."
NEW Drugstore Makeup Try-On! Reformulated True Match Foundation | Nothing Over $15!
"The True Match foundation has been reformulated and now it finally comes with its own pump so you don't have to steal a pump off something else, which I'm really happy about. The new formula feels a little bit more lightweight than the original and it seems like it's giving me lighter coverage, a little bit sheerer than the original. The formula is definitely a lot runnier and it looks like the color might be slightly different too. The new one looks a little bit darker and a little bit pinker to me while the original looks a little bit paler and a little bit more yellowy. I'm not too happy about the new color, it does look a little bit light on me, whereas the original color was dead on perfect for me. However, despite the color change and sheerer coverage, it does look very skin-like and pretty, and after 10 hours of wear it's held up really well, even better wear than I tend to get out of the original True Match. It hasn't settled into wrinkles and it's only a little bit worn off on my nose, so the foundation still looks really good."
Faves + Fails! Pore Minimizing Makeup, Red Light Mask, Hair Styler! Feb 2023
"I tried the new L'Oreal True Match foundation this month and I was so thrilled that it now comes with a pump. They also reformulated it. The old formulation was one of my holy grail foundations. I just loved how it looked on my skin. It was a nice satin matte, but not a flat matte. Really beautiful. The color match for me was spot on when I was using the original True Match. The new neutral three is very light and very yellow and has a lot of yellow undertones. So it just didn't match me anymore. I've worn the new one bunch. I really like it a lot. It is more lightweight and more natural-looking on the skin than the old. I found the wear of this one to be a little bit longer and I actually like it better because it does look natural on the skin."
5 BEST Drugstore Foundations for Mature Skin!
"This is my number one drugstore foundation for mature skin. It retails for under fifteen dollars, around ten ninety-five, and it comes in forty-five shades which I really love about it. This is medium to full coverage, it's fragrance free and hydrating so it's good for all skin types. It sits well on my oilier skin, it sits well on my drier skin, it sits well on my normal skin. It doesn't feel like it ever dries out my skin, it never looks oily at the end of the day, and it's really really smoothing because it doesn't have a super luminous finish. It doesn't settle into my wrinkles very much, it doesn't make it look cakey, it doesn't make me look older. I get around six or seven solid really good hours of wear out of this, and I can stretch it to ten hours if I add a setting spray or primer. When it wears off, it doesn't look bad either, it just kind of fades away gently. This is an all time holy grail, hands down number one recommendation from the drugstore."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.

Source: DermNet

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
