What the gurus are saying

The niacinamide in this moisturizer earned praise for its ability to calm redness, support the moisture barrier, and help with dark spots and aging signs. However, the retinol story is more complicated: it contains retinyl palmitate and proretinol, which work mainly as surface antioxidants but do not boost collagen production the way prescription retinol does. The vitamin C included is not the stabilized form (ascorbic acid) shown to reverse sun damage; instead, it functions as an antioxidant at the skin's surface. Those layering it under other actives like tretinoin have found it helpful as a base, though the retinoid claims may not deliver the anti-aging results the marketing suggests.

"It's a thick, rich moisturizer. It has niacinamide, which is a workhorse ingredient for dark spots, redness, the moisture barrier, anti-glycation, anti-aging. Wonderful if you tolerate it. It also has proretinol, which is a marketing gimmick because they know that the term retinol sells better. It has retinyl palmitate, which is a retinyl ester. These act as antioxidants in skincare products, but they do not do what retinol or retinaldehyde do. They don't improve collagen production. So it's not the same thing as getting a retinol as far as the outcome. It also has vitamin C, but not ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid is the form of vitamin C which has been shown to improve collagen production and reverse some sun damage, but it has stability issues and is challenging to get into the skin. The other vitamin C derivatives work at the surface of the skin as antioxidants, but it doesn't appear as though they actually improve collagen production or reverse sun damage."

"I was putting on my moisturizer first because I am doing the retinoid sandwich where I put moisturizer on first. This is the L'Oreal Revital Lift moisturizer."
