What the gurus are saying

A gentle yet powerful exfoliant that delivers results close to an in-office peel, earning praise for its cooling sensation and how skin feels afterward. One reviewer found the formulation thoughtful and effective enough for both beginners and experienced users, though another felt the bottle design fell short and preferred an alternative product overall. Those new to chemical peels may want to start slowly and patch-test first, given the strength.

"I wouldn't recommend the L'Oreal Bright Reveal Dark Spot Exfoliant Peel over this one. I've tried it and I would recommend this over that almost any day of the week, probably any day actually. It's better formulated. My main issue is the bottle."

"This is my favorite part of the peel. [...] It's very gentle, so I put it on specifically for this purpose. [...] I find this peel extremely gentle. There's a very nice cooling sensation afterwards, and I love how my skin feels for the next two hours after I use this peel. [...] Because of all the thought and science I know they put into creating a gentle formulation with a lot of efficacy, this one does great for me. The whole point of this is that it does great results while still being gentle. [...] I came up with the phrase 'gentle enough for the beginner but strong enough for the experienced exfoliator,' and I still think that's true with this peel. This is one of the highest strength exfoliants that you're going to get available over the counter anywhere, pretty much. [...] This is a really heavy hitting product and this is really as close to an in-office chemical peel as you're going to get at home."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.
