What the gurus are saying

The gurus who weighed in raised concerns across several fronts. Some point to pricing that has climbed to prestige levels while the brand remains in drugstore channels, making value harder to justify compared to a decade ago. Others flag formulation issues, particularly SLS concentrations that can strip the skin barrier and trigger inflammation, a real worry for anyone managing acne. The brand has also faced criticism over animal testing allegations and marketing practices. No guru in this set offered a positive take.

"I'm a cruelty-free skincare shopper so I don't buy either of those brands but seeing those changes in prices and remembering I guess it was like 10 years ago when I was a teenager struggling with acne, I just remember purchasing Neutrogena for $6. I remember the Clean and Clear morning burst or that orange cleanser it was under $10, and of course I understand inflation happens and prices have changed, but what's just so crazy is when I looked at these skincare products in CVS I was like these are Sephora prices, these are Ulta prices, like these are Nordstrom prices. I don't understand how it's gotten so insanely expensive."

"If you look on the L'Oreal website they'll talk about some of the beneficial effects of SLS, but it's good up to a certain concentration. It is proven to help clean the skin and clean the scalp, but it can damage that Skin Barrier, and where it damages that Skin Barrier increases the inflammation. If you've got acne, you're stripping the skin of those essential ceramides."

"L'Oreal they faced criticisms for allegations of unethical animal testing practices and controversies surrounding their marketing campaigns."
