    What the gurus are saying

Gentleness and universality stand out as this cleanser's main strengths, with gurus and reviewers finding it suitable for all skin types and fully capable of double cleansing and makeup removal. The consensus was that it performs well and is straightforward to use in any routine, though the lack of distinctive benefits means there are many comparable cleansers readily available to choose from.

"This is their ultra facial hydrating cleanser. It gets a little bit foamy as you massage it into the skin, which is not my favorite texture for a cleanser, but it does not strip the skin. The key ingredients in the cleanser are two of my favorites, [squalane] and glycerin. And there are no fragrances and no essential oils, which is key for me for keeping my skin barrier intact, especially in the winter months. I do not want fragrance and essential oils to irritate my skin."

"The Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser, very gentle, also something that you could just cleanse twice with to remove makeup. The difference is that the Kiehl's one is more universal, so [...] it can pretty much be used for all skin types, whereas the Glow Recipe Avocado one I would say that's more towards dry skin."

"The Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser is a nice cleanser. I don't feel like I have a lot more to add because there are so many cleansers out there."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
