What the gurus are saying

The 0.1 percent retinol concentration is unusually high for an over-the-counter product, and dermatologists appreciate that it pairs with a peptide called acetyl dipeptide-1 that acts as a muscle relaxant while signaling skin to produce more collagen. This combination can help soften fine lines through two paths at once. It's aimed at people already comfortable with retinol, not those new to it or with sensitive skin.

"K's micro do retinol for $65 is a gentle formula, but it is a tried andrue for people who use retinol."

"Kiehl's Micro-Dose Retinol is, I believe, around 0.1%, though they don't disclose it. It has retinol, peptides and ceramides in it and it's a very great beginner's retinol product, the lightest one I found at Sephora."
Let’s Get Intimate: Peptides | Dr. Shereene Idriss
"This contains 0.1 percent retinol, which is one of the strongest ones over the counter—usually they're 0.03, 0.05, and then 0.1, so this is not for sensitive souls. This is for those who are more advanced in the skincare game who are not quite ready for a prescription retinoid but want more from the retinol. Kiehl's is the one I would go for because it's 0.1 percent over the counter, and it has a certain type of peptide called acetyl dipeptide-1 cetyl ester, which is composed of tyrosine and arginine. These are messenger and carrier peptides that are signaling as well as muscle relaxant ones, so it's going to work by basically tricking your skin into thinking there's a slight little injury so that you need to promote more collagen production, and it's also going to work by instantly helping calm your muscles down so that the appearance of your fine lines is less noticeable. Again, is it botox in a bottle? It is not, but it is very interesting."

"If I wanted to use a retinol, the Kiehl's Micro Dose is enough to have an effect but it's not enough to cause any issues, so that's also a perfect beginner retinoid. It has ceramides to replenish your skin as it works."
Top Pick: beginner retinoid

"A great product that pairs the neural peptides with retinol is the Kiehl's Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum. It has acetyl dipeptide-1 acetyl ester, which can help to decrease some of those muscle movements while giving you all the benefits of a retinol."

"One of our favorite starter retinols is the Kiehl's Micro Dose Retinol, which slowly releases over time micro dose amounts of retinol so you don't get that irritation. If you're looking for a starter retinol, that's a really good place to start."

BEST RETINOL FOR YOU | Doctorly Favorites
"The Kiehl's Retinol is a microdose formula of retinol that uses small percentages of retinol that slowly release over time, so you're not getting that irritation but you're still getting the efficacy you would see with retinol. It has peptides which are a really great complementing ingredient, especially when it comes to retinoids because they're very well tolerated but they also have some of the similar benefits in reversing photo aging. Similar to the CeraVe one, it also has ceramides which help to restore the skin barrier, moisturize and basically protect your skin while you're still having those benefits of retinol. I started using this year, really loved it, and it probably used it for several months without any signs of irritation at all and it would get on my eyelids I wouldn't get irritated from it which is fascinating for me because I have very sensitive eyelids. For people that are looking to get into retinols that are familiar with Kiehl's, Kiehl's kind of has a cult-like following, so if you like products from Kiehl's you tend to like other products from Kiehl's, so this is one of my favorite ones."
