What the gurus are saying

It's primarily scented oils that deliver temporary shine with no lasting benefit. While experts found it may slightly improve texture and brightness, the ingredients simply don't support real skin change. Anyone hoping for actual rejuvenation in their night routine would get better results with a retinoid, vitamin C, or a niacinamide serum.

"It just helps with skin texture a little bit, helps to brighten up your skin. It's not even as effective as an AHA quite frankly, but it can help to improve the complexion just a little bit and it can help if you are prone to breakouts. It is one of those oils that has some secondary benefits for acne-prone skin. I just don't see the ingredients here holding up to that claim. You're going to be better off using a retinoid or vitamin C or even a five percent niacinamide serum in your nighttime routine to get that rejuvenated appearance on your skin."

"Here's the Midnight Recovery Concentrate, it's just a bunch of scented oils. It's super popular, but it doesn't do anything, it just kind of gives you a temporary glowy look."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
