  • Too rich for oily skin types

What the gurus are saying

Yam root works as a vegan snail mucin alternative, with reviewers praising its hydrating, calming effects in a rich cream that surprisingly sinks into skin beautifully. It's earned multiple repurchases for dry and dehydrated skin, especially during colder months. It's not ideal for very oily skin, and those with highly reactive acne-prone skin should patch-test first due to the fatty alcohols and silicone.

"It's great for dry, oily, and normal skin types. And for acne prone skin, we've got cater alcohol, steric acid, and sythicone. So, nothing too crazy, but you have very acne prone skin, something to be aware of. Some people have acne prone skin that is more reactive to certain ingredients like fatty acids or some people it's more reactive to like fatty alcohol. So I thought it's important to note that. So very nice overall. Very affordable. I've repurchased it now. The rest of the line's pretty great too."

"The vegan yam root milk cream is just amazing. I'm on my second or third bottle of this stuff now and it's really hydrating. This stuff is amazing for dry dehydrated skin or very cool times or if you're someone that doesn't want to try snail products, yam root is the next best option."

"It's got yam root obviously, it's got sunflower seed oil, it's got ceramides, it's got oat extract, it's got rice extract. It's really nice. I think this is my second tube, second or third tube. It's got a really nice creamy texture to it. So if you're someone that is sensitive to snail mucin, yam root is what they say is the closest vegan alternative to snail mucin apparently, and a lot of brands are using it. So it's really nice in this one. It's got no scent to it."
My Top Ten Current K-Beauty Moisturizers and Face Creams - Fragrance Free!
"This one's fragrance free. I consider it kind of the vegan alternative to snail because yam root is similar in terms of its benefits for the skin, its texture and things like that, so it's kind of used as a substitute for vegan snail products. We got the yam, we got sunflower seed oil, we got panthenol, we got oat, we got sweet almond extract, and then we got rice extract in here as well. It's wonderful, nice product, great product, worth checking out, pretty affordable as well."
Top 50 Best Skincare Products of 2023 💖✔ Part Two - My Favorite Skincare Products of the Year!
"This stuff is super hydrating, calming, it's rich so I would say for super oily skin types it's probably a pass. But this stuff is great. If you've tried or thought about trying snail products and they're not quite your thing, which some people it's not their thing and I totally get it, yam root is the next best alternative. It's very similar in its composition and its effects on skin to snail mucin. So if you want to try the snail cream and haven't or not tempted for snails, this is the way to go. And it's super hydrating, calming, it works great in your evening routine and really wonderful on skin."
My Most Repurchased KBeauty Products of the Year 🙌 Favorite K-Beauty Skincare Products of 2023
"I love this stuff. It's got a wonderful texture. It's similar to the CeraVe snail cream but just a little bit less goopy, and it really works great for super dry skin. The first time I picked this up was at the beginning of the year when it was still cold and dry out, so this stuff was really wonderful."

Top Ten NEW! 🆕 KBeauty Skincare Products of 2023 - My Favorite New K-Beauty Products of the Year
"Yet another Isntree product, the vegan yam root milk cream. This is another one I've repurchased, I'm on my second bottle of it already. It's wonderful. It's a rich calming cream, it's for dry, very dry skin types or for winter dry climates. Has a texture similar in my opinion to snail cream, it's a little less goopy but still really nice. And yam root is a nice alternative if you're not into snail, if you're vegan, it is the next best ingredient that is somewhat similar in terms of texture and benefits to snail."

"I found myself being mad at myself, why have I not been using this more. This is such a hefty, occlusive, deeply nourishing moisturizer, it is so perfect for this colder weather and yet it's so beautiful, it sinks into your skin so nicely, a level up from the hyaluronic acid moist cream. It is just so well made, you see emollient oils in the ingredients list in addition to five different types of ceramide. This would easily be a sixty dollar product in Sephora at 2.7 fluid ounces. I'm so glad I sat down to try some more of these products."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
