What the gurus are saying

This sunscreen's fluid, water-like texture earns praise for being comfortable to wear daily, leaving no white cast, and not gunking up in beards. Gurus found it both hydrating and protective in warm weather. The caveat: once temperatures climb above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the lightweight watery formula may become less reliable, so it's worth having a backup for very hot days.

"This is the Isdin Fusion Water Magic SPF 40 broad spectrum daily use sunscreen. This is a good hydrating sunscreen and it's very much like a fluid in its consistency. I have worn it before and it's done a good job protecting me. This is a chemical sunscreen, no white cast, not gunking up in the beard at all."
Mixed
"This is not a mineral sunscreen, but it has a very watery texture, so you have to be careful. You have to cup it instead of applying it normally, because it's going to be watery. It leaves the skin with a radiant finish and feels a little balmy. I like things that dry down to a dry finish, and I'm not really feeling this one. I wore this on a day when it was pretty warm out, in the mid to high 70s, and it was fine when I didn't have makeup on. But if it gets hotter than that, like over 80 degrees, this is probably not the sunscreen I would want to wear. And I would definitely not wear it on a makeup day during the summer. So I'd say this is more of a fall, maybe winter, and probably spring sunscreen."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
