What the gurus are saying

Dermatologists recommend hydrocortisone for targeted itch relief on the body, particularly for bug bites and contact dermatitis, but emphasize strict rules: use sparingly, avoid the face to prevent steroid rosacea and perioral dermatitis, and discontinue irritants like deodorant during treatment. The consensus is that it's effective for short-term use on non-facial areas when applied correctly.

"When patients come with contact dermatitis under their arms I will prescribe a steroid cream and you can use hydrocortisone over the counter twice a day for one to two weeks but you need to stop your anti-perspirant and or deodorant for the entire duration of the treatment or else the rash is going to keep coming back."

"If you get a mosquito bite or a bug bite, slap a little hydrocortisone on it because that can definitely help get rid of that itch. You only need a teeny tiny little dot though, you don't need a lot and just put it on the bug by itself. However, don't use this on the face, it can cause problems on the face like steroid rosacea, it can cause perioral dermatitis on the face. But on the legs, the arms, the back, the chest, it's fine. It's really weak so it's not going to likely cause much in the realm of harmful side effects, but it is possible on the face for more problems to arise."

"If you're itchy you want to do something to stop the itch. There are tons of different creams specifically hydrocortisone creams that can help to stop the itch."
