What they liked

  • Moisturizing formula
  • Tinted, skips need for separate base

What they flagged

  • Too grippy for eyeshadow blending if new to makeup
  • Oil control needs a mattifying primer on top

What the gurus are saying

This primer earns consistent praise for its hydrating formula and ability to keep eyeshadow in place without creasing. The tinted, flesh-tone shade color-corrects lids and eliminates the need for a separate base. However, it has a grippy texture that works beautifully for experienced makeup users but may challenge beginners, as the eyeshadow won't glide and blend as freely. Those with very oily lids may want to pair it with a mattifying primer underneath to control oil secretion.

"I love the Hourglass Veil Primer. I would suggest using a mattifying primer to lock that hydration in, but minimize the amount of oil that is being secreted from the face."

"This is going to take two pumps. This is super moisturizing."

"I'm gonna take my hourglass Veil eyeshadow primer. I looked for the Too Faced one that she used but I couldn't find it anywhere so we're just going to use this. This primer also didn't seem to have any color so I opted out of my usual Nars tinted one and we're going for this hourglass primer instead. I'm just gonna kind of apply this all over the lid."

"The Hourglass Veil Primer is my current fave. Eyelid primer will help your eyeshadow to stay in place better and will help it to not crease."

"If you looked at most of my videos before, I was using this Hourglass Veil Primer. I love this primer. It's kind of a flesh tone, a little bit of a pinky flesh. When you put it on your eyelids, it just helps to color correct your lid. It helps to smooth the skin of your lid. It's fairly grippy though, so when you put on your eyeshadow, it tends to stay where you put it. This one tends to work better for people who are more skilled with eyeshadow. If you're a beginner, it may be too grippy and the eyeshadow might not blend out enough for you. But it is a fantastic eyelid primer. Absolutely love that one."

"I love this one because it's tinted and it also just glides over the skin so beautifully. It really is soothing and feels lovely. Your eye shadow will just blend out so much better with this, and then during the day it won't settle into your creases."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
