What the gurus are saying

Polypodium leucotomos earns consistent praise for offering measurable UV protection that works alongside sunscreen and clothing rather than replacing them. Dermatologists and skincare experts point to clinical research backing its ability to reduce sun damage and sunburns, and note it may help prevent melasma flares during summer months. Most suggest taking it in the morning on days you'll spend extended time outside, though some take it daily; it's not studied in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so those populations may want to skip it.

"I take this every day. Polypodium leucotomos, aka fern block, is their trademark name. This stuff helps prevent sun damage from your skin. So, I take it every single day and especially on days if I travel somewhere where it's sunnier out. I'm definitely not messing around with skipping a day of it. It helps protect your skin from sun damage and it's studied and researched and yeah, it's the real deal. I do feel better on the days I take it. If I skip it for a few days, I notice it."

"Heliocare, there are studies that prove Polypodium Leucotomos prevent sun damage better than just using sunscreen alone. I've been taking this supplement now for over 5 years. I take one a day, or sometimes in the summer I'll take two, and I take them in the morning. It's proven there's PubMed research on it that it protects the skin, and by protecting the skin from sun damage you protect it from aging."

"I'm still taking my Heliocare Polypodium Leucotomos Supplement. It's one of two supplements I'm relying on in addition to sunscreen every day to help fight off damage from UV rays, especially being someone that's prone to hyperpigmentation and melasma. This is basically Polypodium Leucotomos extract, which is a fern plant. This is just a name brand, but there are a lot of other ways you can purchase it from other brands -- this just happens to be a brand I trust and I can buy at my local Walgreens or on Amazon."

"Heliocare supplement if you can tolerate supplements, that's a great one because it helps protect your skin from sun and things like that."

"Polypodium leucotomos comes from a fern so it's a plant-based ingredient that offers antioxidant properties that help with UV protection. When you're taking this as a supplement it's in oral form you can take it as a pill it also comes in gummy form and it offers additional UV protection that extends beyond what your sunscreen or UPF clothing could offer. These supplements have a rather immediate effect so I usually take it the morning of when I'm going to be doing those activities. I've been taking a Polypodium Leucotomos Supplement for years but I did not take it when I was pregnant and when I was breastfeeding it's just not studied in those populations and it wasn't something I personally felt comfortable with."

"There's an extract from a fern plant called polypodium leucotomos that's shown to enhance your skin's ability to defend against UV radiation. Heliocare is the most popular brand with polypodium leucotomos containing supplements. This is something I do recommend for people who are at high risk for skin cancers including melanoma or for people who are going to be outside for prolonged periods of time, people who burn pretty easily even with sunscreen and other sun protective measures."

"Polypodium leucotomos has probably the best evidence for preventing damage from the Sun. It's in Heliocare with the cornerstone ones."

"Heliocare is a supplement that's been shown in clinical studies to reduce UV damage and sunburns. It's derived from a fern from South America called Polypodium leucotomos. It is not a replacement for sunscreen, however when taken with sunscreen on top of some protective clothing, it really essentially is an oral antioxidant supplement that can offer additional protection against damage. You can think of it as a practical way to reduce the risk of skin cancer. I use it in aesthetic dermatology in the sense that it helps to reduce melasma flares during the summer time, and certainly if you want less sun damage for anti-aging concerns, this would be a great one. You can take it every day, but I find it to be most doable when I know I'm going to spend all day out, and I will often take one when I know I'm going to spend extended time outside as additional protection for my skin. You essentially just take one to two as needed when you need to."
