What the gurus are saying

Residue buildup on the roots troubles some, even though zinc pyrithione, the key active ingredient, is excellent and genuinely effective against dandruff. The formula works well but feels heavy on the scalp, making it better for home wear or light activity than workdays. Those who need their scalp to feel light and comfortable throughout the day may want to use this occasionally or save it for weekends.

"This is obviously marketed as an anti-dandruff shampoo, Head & Shoulders Classic Clean, zinc pyrithione, but you could also use this as a face wash if you deal with seborrheic dermatitis, those little flaky red patches in the eyebrows. It is a touch drying, but it works well for cutting down on that as well as what people call fungal acne, which isn't really acne. It's actually malassezia folliculitis, overgrowth of yeast in the hair follicle and surrounding inflammation, itchy acne-like bumps, no blackheads, no whiteheads."

"Head and Shoulders shampoo is on sale here for $14.99. In my opinion, this is a zinc pyrithione anti-dandruff shampoo, a medicated shampoo. I think this would be a more practical choice, because you at least get the zinc pyrithione in there at an established strength."

"You actually can use the ingredient zinc pyrithione, which is found in anti-dandruff shampoos like Head & Shoulders Classic Clean. Zinc pyrithione helps to calm down that little yeast, helps clear up some of it, and can get these patches to clear away and calm down and prevent them from coming back. You can just get a zinc pyrithione anti-dandruff shampoo, lather it to the affected areas, leave it on the skin for a couple of minutes, and then rinse it off. Do this daily when you're in the midst of a flare, and then maybe once a week thereafter as maintenance."

"Head and Shoulders shampoo has zinc in it. It works to treat dandruff by addressing the malassezia yeast or helping to exfoliate those abnormal clumps of skin cells that aren't turning over properly because of the inflammation in the scalp, and it ultimately helps cut down on flake formation. It also has anti-inflammatory properties."

"What you're looking at in terms of the dots is ZPT deposition per unit area, and we really see no difference in a forty five second wash time versus a three minute wash time. That's because of the dynamics of that coacervate system and the dilution effects, and rinsing your hair while you're using Head & Shoulders is actually what helps deposit the active ingredient. So contrary to this myth that I believed for so many years, at least with Head & Shoulders it's not really true. You can recommend to your patients that they should just use it like any other shampoo. So if that's a barrier for people, that barrier can be removed, and it's also on us, we have to communicate this a little better, that you don't have to let it sit for that long."

"Anti-dandruff shampoos with ingredients like selenium sulfide, ciclopirox olamine, or zinc pyridinethione, such as what is in Head & Shoulders Classic Clean, can help reduce the amount of malassezia yeast. Lather it onto the affected area, leave it on the skin for a few minutes, then rinse it off. Do that every night for a couple of weeks and then weekly as maintenance, and that will help control things. That being said, anti-dandruff shampoos with these ingredients can be a little drying, a little irritating."
BEST SHAMPOOS FOR HAIR GROWTH
"The first shampoo is actually a zinc pyrithione anti-dandruff shampoo, and you'll find zinc pyrithione in Head & Shoulders Classic Clean. The way this ingredient ends up working out for dandruff is it has an antifungal property to it, it reduces the burden of malassezia yeast on the scalp, and those malassezia yeast play a key role in dandruff, but they also can generate a lot of inflammation in the scalp, and that inflammation can create an environment in your scalp that favors the miniaturization process. So by using a zinc pyrithione anti-dandruff shampoo, you can support better scalp health, and ultimately that may help in getting you better results from your androgenetic alopecia treatments. This has been observed clinically as well as in studies, that patients who use a zinc pyrithione anti-dandruff shampoo do show an improvement in hair growth and thickness and density. How often do you need to use it to derive the benefits for scalp health for your hair regrowth journey? Two to four times a week. Now, not everyone tolerates shampooing their hair that frequently, so if you only shampoo your hair once a week, then you use it once a week. The goal isn't to be perfect, but to at least derive some of the benefits from the ingredients, but also supporting scalp health."

"How do we go after that yeast? Number one, zinc pyrithione. Zinc pyrithione is traditionally in Head & Shoulders Classic Clean, and you can see in the active ingredient list it says pyrithione zinc. Zinc pyrithione really goes after that yeast. You have to use a shampoo every day for it to work, and if you're having a dry scalp, a lot of people make the mistake of decreasing the frequency of washing their hair when actually you should be increasing the frequency to wash out that yeast. If you don't wash your hair, that yeast is really going to build up on your scalp and it's going to have these thick, scaly plaques on the scalp that are holding on to your hair shafts and can even lead to hair loss."

"Zinc pyrithione is another big one, Head and Shoulders pioneered a lot of its use and it works really well. The main downside is that it's insoluble, the tiny particles can make your hair feel a bit gritty. It was recently banned in the EU even though it was found to be safe at under 1%, and that means it should still not be harmful at 100%, that's just an EU regulations quirk where ingredients that have specific health effects get banned just in case, but it is still available in other countries. The Head and Shoulders Bare range might be a good option if you think you have an allergy, these have less ingredients."

"Everyone's telling me to use Head and Shoulders as a face wash because I have fungal acne going on all around my face. Head and Shoulders is antifungal, so it helps fungal acne. You guys, it worked. Look at my skin, she's healing. I cannot believe that this actually worked, it cleared my skin in 3 days. But is this something you should try? Well, only if you have real fungal acne. Fungal acne is technically not acne like you may think it is, it doesn't create pimples, it doesn't cause breakouts. It's more of a folliculitis due to a type of fungus, and yes, this is the same type of fungus that can create dandruff in your scalp, so it's true that Head and Shoulders can treat that. Fungal acne typically presents as tiny little bumps that are often itchy, not sounding like pimples and normal acne breakouts. So if you think you have this, my recommendation would be to see a dermatologist and get that confirmed. If however you have true acne, then Head and Shoulders is definitely not a solution for you."

These Acne Hacks Are Going Viral… But Do They Work? (as a derm for 16+ years )
"Dandruff is exacerbated by the yeast that lives on our skin. If people have what's called fungal acne, or pityrosporum folliculitis, where you actually get yeast invading your hair follicles and causing an acne-like breakout, Head and Shoulders could certainly work for that. So Head and Shoulders can work if you have pityrosporum folliculitis, aka fungal acne, which most people don't have, and it may help somewhat with people with regular acne. I'm a little bit cautious. It's not formulated for facial skin, so you want to watch out for potentially drying out your skin. It's not a go-to recommendation from derms."

"Using an anti-yeast shampoo is helpful, things that include ingredients like zinc, and Head and Shoulders has that. I would just be a little bit cautious because these shampoos are essentially made for the scalp and could be a little bit harsh for the face, so I wouldn't use them every day, or just focus on those areas."

Struggling with Hair Loss? Dermatologist Explains Causes & Treatments
"Head and Shoulders Classic Clean is one to consider for an anti-dandruff shampoo. The active ingredients to look for are pyrithione zinc, selenium sulfide, or ketoconazole. Dandruff shampoos are important to control scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff, to reduce inflammation which can harm hair follicles, and that helps clear all the buildup that may be blocking hair growth."

"You definitely want to make sure you're using an anti-dandruff shampoo that contains zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, or nizoral, for example, or even Head & Shoulders. You want to use that regularly to help with reducing dandruff and the inflammation that contributes to oxidative stress. Even if you don't struggle with dandruff, incorporating an anti-dandruff shampoo is the best thing you can do to support a healthy hair environment. Studies have shown that anti-dandruff shampoos alone, whether you have dandruff or not, can support hair regrowth, namely zinc pyrithione and ketoconazole."

"Head and Shoulders, they actually have great formulas for dandruff. They have lots of different lines within Head and Shoulders for different hair types, including ones for curly, textured hair. Their Royals line is great if you have dandruff and don't wash your hair often, so you get sebum buildup but really can't wash your hair because of your textured hair. Their Royals line is really made for individuals who have curly, kinky, coily hair texture that really struggle with dandruff but won't dry out your hair. In general I find that zinc pyrithione formulations tend to be more nourishing for hair, less drying than prescription ketoconazole or even over-the-counter versions, so Head and Shoulders is a great affordable version that also works really well but isn't as drying on hair."

"If someone has a really flaky or oily scalp, one of the first things I do is incorporate an anti-dandruff shampoo, and most of the time we start them with Head and Shoulders Classic Clean. You really want to think of these as a scalp wash. They're there to cleanse your scalp, and yes they'll cleanse your hair as well, but you want to focus them right up on the skin on your head. So for a lot of people, especially if you have longer hair, curly hair, or thicker hair, you want to flip your head over in the shower so you can really get your hair to fall away from your scalp, and you can press that shampoo down to your scalp, down to the roots, where it's going to exert its best effects."

How to Shower Like a Dermatologist for Your Smoothest Skin Ever | Dr. Sam Ellis
"The one I use the most often for the first step of my double cleanse is Head and Shoulders. I started using it after the birth of my son a few years ago when I started getting dandruff, and what I noticed is aside from my dandruff getting a lot better and having fewer flakes, my hair just felt so much cleaner afterward. So it has been a staple in our shower for years now. I really work to get it on my scalp, I'm less concerned about sudsing it up around my hair. Sometimes I'll even use a little silicone scalp brush to really massage it into the base of my scalp, something that's not too hard or abrasive, I don't want to scratch my scalp, but something that's going to help suds it up and get it where it needs to go. A fun fact I very recently learned, and it goes against how I used to counsel my patients, is that zinc pyrithione, which is the active ingredient in Head and Shoulders that treats your dandruff, doesn't need to sit on your skin for a prolonged period of time to give you benefits. We always used to counsel let it sit for two to three minutes and then rinse, but it actually doesn't need to sit on your scalp to be effective, so this should be a very quick step in your routine."

"The biggest hack has been, for a lot of people, using something like Head and Shoulders shampoo, the kind that's geared to treat dandruff, because that ingredient specifically also helps with fungal acne. But my recommendation wouldn't be Head and Shoulders, or any of those, because they have a lot of scent in them."

"Pick up some Head and Shoulders Classic Clean shampoo, use that as a body wash, wash it onto the skin, lather up, and let it sit for about five minutes. That's going to help kill that little yeast that's causing the tinea versicolor. Even when you're totally clear, just do that once a week and it'll help prevent it from coming back, because people that tend to get tinea versicolor often have it come back, often every summer, so using that as a preventative tool can be very helpful."
