What the gurus are saying

Experts strongly praise Head and Shoulders for delivering a reliable dose of zinc pyrithione that cuts down yeast and calms flaking and itching on the scalp. Many also note it can help with fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis) if used on the face, though it's formulated for hair and may dry out facial skin, so patch-testing first makes sense. The main catch: it works best as a regular shampoo rather than occasional use, and the drying effect on hair ends means those with textured hair may need to pair it with a moisturizing conditioner to stick with it long-term.

"This is obviously marketed as an anti-dandruff shampoo, head and shoulders, zinc pyrithione, but you could also use this as a face wash if you deal with seborrheic dermatitis, those little flaky red patches in the eyebrows. It is a touch drying, but it works well for cutting down on that as well as what people call fungal acne, which isn't really acne. It's actually malassezia folliculitis. But it's overgrowth of yeast in the hair follicle and surrounding inflammation, itchy acne-like bumps. No blackheads, no whiteheads."

"Head and Shoulders shampoo is a zinc pyrithione anti-dandruff medicated shampoo. I think this would be a more practical choice to use versus other options because you at least get the zinc pyrithione in there at an established strength."

"I've seen these newer Head and Shoulders shampoos with zinc pyrithione, and I love that these particular formulations in contrast to Classic Clean do not have methyl isothiazolinone in them. What just dawned on me is that this is a new type of shampoo packaging where you roll it up so you don't waste a single drop. Nothing more annoying than knowing you are down to the dregs like this happens with pumps right, you've still got plenty of shampoo down there but it's trapped at the corner. I like that you can squeeze out every single drop."

"You can use the ingredient zinc pyrithione which is found in anti-dandruff shampoos like Head and Shoulders shampoo. Zinc pyrithione helps to calm down that little yeast, help to clear up some of it, and can get these patches to clear away and calm down and prevent them from coming back. You can just get a zinc pyrithione anti-dandruff shampoo, lather it to the affected areas, leave it on the skin for a couple of minutes, and then rinse it off. Do this daily when you're in the midst of a flare and then maybe once a week thereafter as maintenance."

"Head and Shoulders shampoo with zinc python is a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo that works to treat dandruff by addressing either the malesia yeast or helping to exfoliate those abnormal clumps of skin cells that aren't turning over properly because of all the inflammation in the scalp and ultimately help to cut down on flake formation. It also has anti-inflammatory properties."
My Scalp And Hair UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
"Head and Shoulders, it's great for scalp control, but it can be drying on the ends, especially if you have more of a textured hair type. And that can limit somebody's willingness to use it regularly, and they may only use it when they have a flare up. And it works best if you use it as your every time shampoo. Every time you shampoo, you use that. That really gives the best dandruff control from that particular anti-dandruff shampoo."

"Anti-dandruff shampoos with the ingredients selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, or zinc pyrithione such as what is in Head and Shoulders shampoo can help reduce the amount of malassezia yeast."
BEST SHAMPOOS FOR HAIR GROWTH
"Head and Shoulders shampoo contains zinc pyrithione, an anti-dandruff ingredient that has an antifungal property to it. It reduces the burden of malassezia yeast on the scalp, and those malassezia yeast play a key role in dandruff. They also can generate a lot of inflammation in the scalp, and that inflammation can create an environment in your scalp that favors the miniaturization process. By using a zinc pyrithione anti-dandruff shampoo you can support better scalp health and ultimately that may help in getting you better results from your androgenetic alopecia treatments. This has been observed clinically as well as in studies that patients who use a zinc pyrithione anti-dandruff shampoo do show an improvement in hair growth and thickness and density. You can use it two to four times a week, though if you only shampoo your hair once a week then you use it once a week. The goal isn't to be perfect but to at least derive some of the benefits from the ingredients but also support scalp health."

Dermatologist Explains: How to Manage an Itchy and Flaky Scalp
"Zinc pythione is traditionally in Head and Shoulders and you can see here in the active ingredient list here it says pythionone zinc pythone or zinc pythone really goes after that yeast. You have to use a shampoo every day for it to work and if you are having dry scalp a lot of people make the mistake by decreasing the frequency of washing your hair when actually you should be increasing the frequency to wash out that yeast. If you don't wash your hair your scalp that yeast is really going to build up and it's going to have these thick scaly plaques in the scalp that are holding on to your hair shafts and can even lead to hair loss."

"I loved Head and Shoulders and I'll continue to use it, but this is like just modern. It's modern. And this has kind of been designed to be like an all-in-one medicated treatment that targets both dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis. And honestly, it's kind of something that dermatologists have been recommending for years, but kind of like never existed in one bottle until now. Traditionally, if you struggle with dandruff, the advice was to rotate between two shampoos, like a salicylic acid one, and then ketoconazole to address the yeast. It's basically to help exfoliate and reduce the buildup. The problem is two shampoos switching back and forth. It's really annoying. So this formula solves that by bringing it all together in one formulation. You get 1.8% salicylic acid in here to gently exfoliate the scalp, dissolve flakes, and encourage healthy cell turnover. And then you get ketoconazole, one of the most effective ingredients for controlling dandruff at its root cause. But what makes it stand out even more is the addition of these soothing botanicals. When I think of scalp treatments, I always think of those really strong minty ones that hurt your eyes. This just feels nice and almost calming."

"Head and Shoulders is antifungal, so it helps fungal acne. You guys, it worked. Look at my skin. She's healing. I cannot believe that this actually worked. Head and Shoulders cleared my skin in 3 days. So, is this something that you should try? Well, only if you have real fungal acne. Fungal acne is technically not acne like you may think it is. It doesn't create pimples. It doesn't cause breakouts that most of us who have acne have. Fungal acne is more of a folliculitis due to a type of fungus. And yes, this type of fungus is the same type of fungus that can create dandruff in your scalp. So, it's true that Head and Shoulders can treat that type of fungal acne, but technically, once again, it's not like the acne that you're used to. Now, fungal acne typically presents as tiny little bumps that are often itchy. Once again, not sounding like pimples and normal acne breakouts. So, if this is something that you think you have, my recommendation would be to see a dermatologist and get that confirmed. If however you have true acne, then Head and Shoulders is definitely not a solution for you."

"Head and Shoulders can work if you have pityrosporellicitis aka fungal acne, which most people don't have. It may help somewhat with people with regular acne, though I'm a little bit cautious. It's not formulated for facial skin, so you want to watch out for potentially drying out your skin. It's not a go-to recommendation from derms."

"Others to consider here are Head and Shoulders, Celsius Blue, and other anti-dandruff shampoos. The active ingredients to look for are either pyrithione zinc, selenium sulfide, or ketoconazole. Dandruff shampoos are important to control scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff to reduce inflammation which can harm hair follicles. That will help clear all the buildup that may be blocking hair growth."

"You want to use anti-dandruff shampoo that contains like zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, or ketoconazole, for example, like Head and Shoulders, but you want to use that regularly to help with reducing dandruff and the inflammation that contributes to oxidative stress. Even if you don't struggle with dandruff, incorporating an anti-dandruff shampoo is the best thing you can do to support a healthy hair environment. "For more affordable options Head and Shoulders has great formulas that work well for dandruff. They have lots of different lines for different hair types, including ones for curly textured hair. Their Royals line is great if you have dandruff and don't wash your hair often due to buildup, but really can't wash your hair because of textured hair. It's made for individuals that have curly, kinky, coily hair texture that struggle with dandruff but won't dry out your hair. In general, zinc pyrithione formulations tend to be more nourishing for hair and less drying than prescription ketoconazole or over-the-counter options. Head and Shoulders is a great affordable version that also works really well but is not as drying on hair."

"If someone has a really flaky or oily scalp, one of the first things I do is incorporate an anti-dandruff shampoo. Most of the time we start them with Head and Shoulders. When using these anti-dandruff shampoos, you really want to think of them as a scalp wash. They are there to cleanse your scalp and yes they will cleanse your hair as well, but you want to focus them right up on the skin on your head so you can press that shampoo down to your scalp down to the roots where it's going to exert its best effects."

I started using Head and Shoulders and what I noticed is aside from my dandruff getting a lot better and having fewer flakes my hair just felt so much cleaner afterward and so it has been a staple in our shower for years now. Zinc pyrithione, which is the active ingredient in Head and Shoulders that treats your dandruff, doesn't need to sit on your skin for a prolonged period of time to give you benefits."

"I would recommend picking up some Head and Shoulders shampoo or some ketoconazole shampoo which you can get over the counter and use that as a body wash, wash it onto the skin, lather up and let it sit for about five minutes and that's going to help kill that little yeast that is causing the tinea versicolor. And even when you're totally clear, just do that once a week and it'll help prevent it from coming back because people that tend to get tinea versicolor often have it come back, you know, often every summer. So using that as a preventative tool can be very helpful."
