  • White cast more noticeable on deeper skin tones

What the gurus are saying

This mineral sunscreen blends unusually smoothly and settles without the chalky thickness or heavy white cast typical of mineral formulas, earning consistent praise for its elegant, hydrating texture. The nourishing ingredients and emollient base keep it from drying the skin the way many mineral sunscreens do, and it finishes semi-dewy rather than matte or greasy. Those who typically skip mineral formulas find this one approachable; fair skin tones see minimal white cast, though it may be more noticeable on deeper skin.

"This is our only mineral sunscreen on today's list. For people that like a mineral sunscreen, this is my go-to. It's also one of the most matte of all the ones I've tried. So if you're super oily, maybe you're acne prone and you want something that isn't going to give you any shine whatsoever, I think this is a really good option. Comes in a pump, too. Now, if you see this, it is thicker. It's a mineral sunscreen. There's no getting around that. So it is thicker and you do have to work it in a little bit more than you would a chemical sunscreen, but again, that's to be expected. Same for all mineral sunscreens. But if you work this in, you'll see it just gives a really nice finish. This is just your natural skin maybe mattify down a little bit. And I'm someone that gets progressively oilier as the day goes on. This keeps all that in check. It really does help to rebalance the oil levels in the skin. And so you shouldn't see that greasiness peeking through. It's really nice. If you like a mineral sunscreen, that is a really, really great option."

"This is hands down the lightest weight mineral sunscreen I've ever found. I love it, it just blends seamlessly with my skin. As someone who's not a fan of mineral sunscreens, this is probably the one that I genuinely reach for as part of my routine. It's slightly thicker than some of the others when you put it on, but when you work it in it's truly invisible and disappears without a trace, blends in really quickly. It is really genuinely matte too, so if you're looking for something that keeps you matte all day long still without looking too chalky, this is a great option. I think this would work really well for people with very oily, acne-prone skin that would benefit from that slightly more matte finish. It doesn't feel like I'm wearing anything whatsoever on the skin. Lightweight, doesn't lead to a white cast or any ashiness. I'm not always the biggest supporter of mineral sunscreens for my own routine, but if I reach for one, this Haruharu one is the one that I go for every single time. I've not found one that's better."

"This is the Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Pure Mineral Daily Sunscreen. This is really nice, slightly thicker than the others, and because it's mineral base you should expect that, but still disappears without a trace. You have to, it takes a little longer to work in, but if you persevere with it, it will disappear. For people that like a mineral sunscreen as opposed to a chemical one, this is a really nice option that feels beautiful. It's fragrance free as are all the ones I've just recommended, so it's not going to leave behind that overwhelming fragrance that some products do."

"If you want a mineral sunscreen that's also a really great moisturizer I would recommend this, the Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Pure Mineral sunscreen. This is a really nice product for people that are looking for those mineral filters. It's not quite as hydrating as the Mad About Skin one, but for a mineral sunscreen it definitely adds back moisture as opposed to looking chalky and drawing out all the hydration that you have in your skin. I really like this one and it's not my day-to day preferred one, but on those days we want to mix it up I always have some great results with this, so I definitely recommend it for those of you guys that love a little mineral action in your sunscreen."

"It's really really nice. Some mineral sunscreens almost leave like a chalkiness on the skin. Not this. It smells nice. It's fragrance free but it does have like just a nice overall finish. I like how it's probably one of the more matte sunscreens that I'm sharing today but it's certainly not like super chalky in any way. I absolutely love this. For those mineral fans out there this is one of the truly mineral sunscreens that actually works."

"This is a really good mineral sunscreen. I did have a slight white cast. It wasn't the worst white cast that I've seen. It blends in beautifully. I don't have to be like really worried because there's some mineral sunscreens that feel very pasty and it's really hard to blend into the skin. This blends in really nicely. It takes a little longer to blend in so that you've got it all covered. If you've got facial hair, the white cast be all in your facial hair, so I had white cast in my eyebrow and in my edges and whatnot. If you are someone with facial hair, keep that in mind. It's a lot easier to blend than a lot of mineral sunscreens I've come across. There is a white cast, but it's not that bad. When working out with that on, if you have ever worked out with a mineral sunscreen on that wasn't water resistant or if you ever sweated outside of working out, the white cast becomes a little bit more apparent. If you're profusely sweating, then you're like dripping white droplets all over the place. So be mindful of that."

"This is mineral relief daily sunscreen SPF 50 plus PA++++, a little bit different. Unlike the chemical, this is 100% mineral or physical sunscreen. Offers broadspectrum protection without any chemical filters. It's still really lightweight, a little bit more creamy, blends pretty easy with minimal almost no white cast. It's definitely ideal for really sensitive, reactive, or even post-procedure skin. It's infused with the same antioxidant rich black rice extract to nourish and protect the skin barrier. The ingredients here are zinc oxide, black rice extract, adenosine, and niacinamide."

"I personally hate mineral sunscreens, but I do like this one. I don't like mineral sunscreens because I have some melanin in my skin, so there will always be some type of white cast, and I also have very dehydration-prone skin and mineral filters seem to zap a lot of moisture from my skin. However, what really impressed me about this sunscreen is that it actually doesn't really seem to dry out my skin that much. There is a little dryness that will always be present for my skin because of zinc and titanium, particularly zinc because it is quite oil absorbing. But there is just something about this one that's so much more comfortable in the grand scheme of mineral sunscreens that just feels so much better for me. I was really impressed with how it felt on my skin and I was also really impressed with the texture of this."

"If you prefer mineral filters I have an option for you: the Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Pure Mineral Relief sunscreen, SPF 50+ PA++++. This retails about twelve dollars, though it's a newer release from Haruharu that just came out this year, so at discount K-Beauty retailers like YesStyle you can get it for twelve dollars, but at more boutique K-Beauty stores you're probably still going to be paying closer to the full price, closer to twenty dollars. They're using zinc oxide for the mineral filter here and I just love how they've executed this. No drying forms of alcohol, no fragrance, no essential oils, and the texture's so good. It's not dry and chalky, it's not hard to spread, and it's not one of those types of mineral sunscreens where you have to rub it into your skin for a really long time to get the white cast. It's like it blends into your skin, it's almost a silky, creamy type of mineral texture that blends effortlessly into the skin. You're not getting those streaky marks."

"I also really like the Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Pure Mineral Relief Daily Sunscreen. I'm not a big fan of mineral sunscreens, but this is one of my favorite mineral formulations, one that I admire a lot. It has a really nice blendability into the skin. With mineral sunscreens there's going to be some white cast. I do find it to be minimal on my skin tone, much more noticeable with more melanin, but it's not chalky, thick, and hard to spread on the skin. There's a nice elegance to this. Blendability, you don't have to rub this really hard into your skin. It blends nicely, settles in very beautifully. I do find mineral filters to be a little drying on my skin, but with this one not as much. There is still a little bit for me personally, but if you've ever had that little twinge of dehydration with mineral sunscreen, this is a much better balanced formulation. They've really taken everything into consideration and created what I find to be a rare statement: an elegant mineral sunscreen."

"If you have very sensitive skin, the texture overall and the consistency make it a great option, not only for dry and or sensitive skin but also for oily, acne-prone skin. I think pretty much any skin type should get along well with this. That being said, no one person's skin is exactly like another, so predicting these things is basically impossible to say for sure if it's going to work out for you or not. But for me, this was a standout best of 2023 Korean skincare product that I highly recommend checking out, especially if you like mineral sunscreens."

"It's really good for skin's moisture barrier and can actually help improve ceramide production in skin's outermost layer. Easy to tolerate around the eyes as a mineral sunscreen, no fragrance, really nice consistency, actually moisturizing, not drying. I don't really have anything bad to say. This is one of the best all-mineral sunscreens I've tried this year."

"This is the Haru Haru Wonder Black Rice Pure Mineral Relief Daily Sunscreen SPF 50. It's fragrance free, which I love, essential oil free, which I love, and it has niacinamide and ceramides in it. The zinc oxide is going to leave some degree of a cast, but that cast is pretty modest, and I really really like the formula here. It's moisturizing yet non-greasy, and it's wonderful if you have rosacea or very sensitive skin, it's very soothing, it doesn't have common irritants in it. If you have a deeper skin tone, this one's not as bad as some but it's definitely going to leave a cast. I am not mad at the Haru Haru Wonder black rice."

"It's a daily sunscreen that is SPF 50 and PA4 pluses, costs about 1760 yen. It contains mineral filters, black rice, rice bran oil, niacinamide, and other plant-derived extracts that are nourishing. I feel like it's the most dense texture-wise, but it's still very much lightweight and easy to spread, and leaves no white cast. It's fragrance-free, free of color and drying alcohol, so great for those with dry and sensitive skin. Finish-wise it still gives a semi-dewy finish, it's definitely not mattifying."

"I put a lot on both arms, my kids helped a little bit, and as you could see it actually blends beautifully over time. At first I was skeptical thinking it's going to leave a white cast but she even told me that she loved it. I did try to put a lot on her arms and it is really really nice. You get this one for $14 and it is beautiful."

"I personally tend not to prefer mineral sunscreens but this is one of my favorite formulas so far. It's from Kolmar and I just feel like they really know how to make good sunscreens that people enjoy using. The finish is not very greasy, it's more of a hydrated finish and it is slightly slide-y so you can blend out any white streaks pretty easily. It has a cream gel consistency. It's got niacinamide and hyaluronic acid and I think that's what contributes to this being not too drying and not too greasy, it is just hydrating, which is pretty rare with mineral sunscreens. I love a good pump container with my sunscreens because I find them really nice and easy to dispense and you can easily work out how many pumps you need to use. For my face these would need three pumps and it would be three to six pumps probably for most people depending on the size of your face."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Source: DermNet

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Source: DermNet

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.
