What the gurus are saying

This toner earns consistent praise for its lightweight yet deeply hydrating texture that layers beautifully without stickiness, making it work across most skin types. The fermented black rice and hyaluronic acid deliver visible plumpness and all-day hydration, though gurus note it is primarily hydrating rather than offering significant brightening or calming benefits, so those with acne-prone skin or seeking soothing properties may want to look elsewhere. A fragrance-free version is now available for sensitive skin, which some reviewers prefer since the original scent can be strong.

"It has a very watery texture, but there's just a little bit of body, just a little bit of plumpness. It's not sticky or tacky or thick, but there's just a little plumpness. It absorbs deeply into the skin very easily and delivers that deep down hydration and plump juicy feel without building up thick on the skin. I use this in one layer, two layers on my skin and it feels amazing. This texture really lends itself to being able to layer it up onto your skin a couple of times. Put one layer on if your skin still feels thirsty. Apply another layer. And so I would recommend this for all skin types."

Empty Skincare and What I Replaced Them With!
"I do like this one because it's definitely that full fat water type of situation toner. It's runny. It's very liquidy. [...] There is just like a kiss of body to it, but it's not like thick plumping gel-like type of consistency. It's watery, quickly absorbed into the skin, layerable without being sticky and tacky despite, you know, hyaluronic being in the name, right? I actually really enjoy this. It's very straightforward. [...] I remember the first time I tried this years ago, I was like, it's whatever. But I just kind of slowly and quietly kept using bottles of this and I was like, you know what, doesn't have to be super exciting to impress me. I do really enjoy this one."
My Haruharu Top 5 Faves!
"I actually do really enjoy this. This is a very solid hydrating toner in my opinion. It is one that has a little bit more body to it so you do feel a good hydration with this, but there's a little bit more of a slip and just a tiny bit of plumpness that this brings to the skin that's actually really pleasant. I do find this to be a replenishing toner, a balancing toner, a gentle toner, but not a sticky toner, not a heavy overwhelming type of toner, not something that's going to weigh your skin down. I do think a majority of skin types will enjoy this. With the hyaluronic acid, I don't find it overwhelming. There's not a lot of bells and whistles on it and I think that's actually a good thing. It's also just very much an affordable toner. I'm routinely finding this on sale for like ten, twelve dollars, so I think it's just a really good value overall. I've invited this into my skincare routine many times over the years and I think it's that combination of solid performing, no bells and whistles, nothing to worry about, good performing texture, and value that all come together to make this something that I am happy to use over and over and over again."

"This is literally like a nice hug for your skin. [...] I have not loved a toner so much. And this is not just a toner. This is like a toner, an essence, a serum. And if you are someone with oily skin or combination skin, this is also like a moisturizer. The only thing I would recommend is that if you're someone with acne prone skin, avoid this. In fact, avoid all milky toners."

"I did not repurchase it because after a huge recommendation I got the Haru Haru Wonder Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner recently and I'm already like halfway through the bottle. This is the most amazing toner and I say I don't think I really need to purchase a hyaluronic acid serum separately since it works like a hyaluronic acid serum. This is absolutely wonderful and I highly recommend it for normal to dry, even combination skin types."

"The ingredients are water, betaine, which is a humectant, glycerin, another water magnet, propanediol, another water magnet, then rice extract and ferment. I love both of these. We get a little bit of alpha arbutin with the ferment. It's hydrating and conditioning. I would say you're not going to get much in terms of hyperpigmentation brightening. Having a fraction of percent of alpha arbutin isn't going to do much, but it is a NA safe product. I'm happy for you to wear this if you have dry, dehydrated skin, flaky skin, sensitive skin, rosacea, all of those skin types are going to benefit from this toner. This one is doctor approved for those specific conditions. It comes out very light on the skin."

"This comes scented or unscented, it's amazing, you can pick the scented one, it's still okay with me, but if you're sensitive you can definitely go with the unscented since it does have a scent. It's a bit slippery, like old-school hyaluronic acid. Nowadays Korean brands have more advanced hyaluronic acid that isn't slippery, but this still absorbs well and works pretty good, and if you layer it two or three times it works like a serum. Hyaluronic acid works for everybody whatever your skin is, especially in humid weather, it holds water in the air so well. If you feel dehydrated from air conditioning, tropical country ladies, try this out today. I'm pretty generous with it."

The Truth About Haruharu Wonder: DON'T Buy Until You Watch This
"This is the product I started to get to know this brand with, and I actually loved it when I first tried it, but now, there's a scented and an unscented version. The lavender scent is strong, so if you're sensitive to fragrance go unscented. The formula feels a bit outdated, it absorbs slowly and feels slightly slippery, and if you layer it twice it gets sticky. It's best for dry, mature skin, that's where it works. But K-beauty formulas have improved a lot lately, and once you try something better it's hard to go back. Torriden has faster absorption, is fragrance free, lightweight, and works for oily, combo, sensitive skin, summer, even for guys, so Torriden wins for me. Haru isn't bad at all, it really comes down to preference, but I reach for Torriden all day."

"This one has hyaluronic acid in it. Compared to other toners it's a lot thicker, for oily skin it takes a little more time to absorb because of the hyaluronic acid, but it stays a lot more hydrating. The scent was okay, and if you're sensitive to scent they have an unscented version. I use this more in winter because it's the thicker version, and I love using this because it works a lot more than the watery ones. Just be careful, some people say it makes them break out, and it has alcohol and lavender oil, which sensitive skin can react to."

"This is the fragrance free version of Haruharu Wonder's core black rice line, and it's what put them on the map. Rice is a great ingredient for sensitive skin, very gentle, with great antioxidant activity, and this toner has such great body to it. I would say this is one of the most hydrating toners I've ever tried, it's absolutely up there. A little goes a long way with this product since it's so thick."

Skincare EMPTIES! Lots of HGs to end the year!
"I really like the Haruharu Wonder toner, but I don't think I'll buy it again. It's a great toner for adding hydration, but I have a difficult, acne prone skin type and I need more calming and soothing, and you don't quite get those properties with this, it's just a very hydrating product. If dryness is your only concern, this could be a holy grail, but I need a little more."

"This is such a good toner option. I think it would be nice to get a toner in this routine because the essence we have is more of a serum-like product. This is the fragrance-free variety, it's nice and watery, it'll be very flexible."

"This is the Haru Haru Wonder Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner, the fragrance-free, alcohol-free version, with fermented rice ingredients as well as hyaluronic acid. It has a little more viscosity to it, it's a little bit thicker in the way it feels on the skin, which I feel translates into being a little more hydrating. I do really like this, I don't know if I would put it in my personal holy grails, and that's simply because what I think this targets is hydration as well as antioxidant benefits from the plant extracts in the formula. Personally I tend to need a little more calming and soothing ingredients."

"I'm pleased that the high quality hyaluronic acid is in this list. If you feel your skin needs that dose of ingredient, reach for this. It's really nice, it feels gorgeous on the skin. It's got a slightly thicker texture, [...] a bit more gel like, [...] and it feels just as nice. The fragrance isn't overpowering, it's there but it's not too much. [...] My skin doesn't tolerate a lot of hyaluronic acid but I've gotten really really well with this, and I think if you like that ingredient, this is probably the one that I would personally recommend."

"I really like this one because [...] it really helps to deliver that instant hydration and freshness to your skin but not just instant, it also at the same time keeps your skin plump and hydrated all day long. The secret is really in the fermentation process and the formulation and the technology that really makes this hydrating toner unique from other Korean hydrating toners. It has hyaluronic acid at its core but not just any hyaluronic acid, the unique fermentation process makes the hyaluronic acid much smaller. When you ferment ingredients they're broken down, they're smaller, and they're more readily absorbed into your skin. Especially with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, it's able to better penetrate into your skin into the deeper layers of your skin, so not only does it provide instant hydration but more long-lasting hydration, keeping your skin plump and hydrated all day long. This toner also helps to prepare your skin for the products that you put on afterwards. [...] Aside from the fermentation, the barrier protection with the ultra deep technology really enhances the penetration of other ingredients in this toner, basically providing additional skin barrier support and repair and making your skin barrier more resilient to all the aggressors that your skin faces on a daily basis."

"Their Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner, it main humectant is of course hyaluronic acids so it provides a really nice hydrating feeling that remains throughout the day and it's kind of like just thicker than water kind of consistency. [...] Rice extract is a really popular ingredient within K Beauty, Haru Haru's version is fermented meaning their fermented black rice extract is two times more effective. It's moisturizing, it's an antioxidant, the black rice leaves your skin feeling plump. This is one of those toners, personally in my opinion, that I love one application for your standard hydration step in your routine, but if you are looking for a dewier glow, say you're going out, you're going to put makeup over the top and you want that glow to shine from within, do a couple of layers with this, a couple after your cleanser and then one more layer before your moisturizer and you're going to get that dewy glow, your skin is going to feel and look super hydrated."

"I'm going to do this with the Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner from Haruharu, one of my favorites. It's very deeply hydrating as well. "When I first tried this I was enamored at how it hydrated my skin. The black rice antioxidants in here were so good for me, and especially when used under sunscreen, not only did it feel amazing but my skin would look better by the end of the day when normally I was used to my large pores and areas of patchiness kind of showing up. This is phenomenal and it is still one of my favorites. It's made in Korea with some of the most hydrating hyaluronic acid and black rice for antioxidants. I would say it's fantastic for combo skin and you can use it if you're dry with a moisturizer or if you're oily on its own. The best part is that they now have a sensitive skin option. In the past they only had the fragranced one which is with lavender, but now they have a fragrance-free sensitive skin safe one."

"This one reminds me of Kombucha for your face. This actually is a fragrance free version and they literally launched a fragrance free option. Look at it—see how it's gelatinous and beautiful, watch how it turns into skincare. I love this so much. The black rice in here is an amazing antioxidant. This goes so well underneath your sunscreen if you're really oily and you're just looking for a little bit of hydration and a little boost under your sunscreen. You could use this instead of a moisturizer, or if you're dry you can layer this along with other toners or serums to give your skin a boost of hydration. The black rice in here is not only used in Korean cooking, which is delicious, but this with the black rice in it is so good and hydrating for the skin."

"HARUHARU Wonder also has their Black Rice Toner. It is like kombucha in a bottle, I love it so much. Just keep in mind that although this doesn't have fragrance, it does have lavender oil and it does have limonene, and so this might not be the best for the most sensitive prone skin."

"Next I'm going in with the Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner. I really love a toning step if you have sensitive skin because working in layers of added hydration can really make the skin not just look better, look more plump and supple, but also feel a lot better. Also, a hydrating toner like this can kind of act as a gentle buffer between your skin and any skincare actives that might be irritating like retinoids or acids. [...] You can see it's nice and liquidy, layers very, very nicely under other products, it's super lightweight on the skin. [...] The Haruharu products [...] are also fragrance-free, so I know with people who have sensitive skin, me included, sometimes fragrance can just set things off, and so going in with things that are fragrance-free just helps eliminate that variable from the sensitive skin equation. And already my skin just feels juicier. [...] My skin feels juicy, so I would consider that like my first layer of hydration, just kind of nourishing the skin, babying it a little bit because when we go in with our anti-aging actives we want our skin to be able to handle that."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
