What the gurus are saying

This lightweight cream gets praise for delivering hydration without feeling heavy, but reviewers split on whether it hits the right weight for all skin types. Those with oily skin may find it too heavy, while dry skin types might want something richer. Since it contains essential oils and fragrance, anyone with sensitive skin should steer clear, though a fragrance-free version is available.

"I really recommend this for those who are looking for something that has moisture but doesn't weigh down the skin. It doesn't have a heavy occlusive, slugged-down kind of feel to it. I find this very, very breathable, very light, but very skin conditioning. The hyaluronic acid really brings a lot of hydration to the skin, really smooths your skin, plumps it up. If you're suffering with dehydration lines, a really hydrating routine before a cream like this is definitely going to help, and working on that barrier is also important. This is that type of cream that can bring some of that bounce, some of that plumpness, some of that smoothness back to your skin. When you bring more of that hydration into the deeper layers of your skin, those fine lines start to smooth out because your skin is holding on to more hydration. It has a beautiful finish, it's not wet, greasy, or overly shiny. It really settles into the skin nicely and it's not super duper occlusive, so I think oily skin types, balanced skin types, combination skin would do well with this."

"It's a moisturizer with extracts and ferment. But the big mistake they made was they added denatured alcohol. And if this is meant for sensitive skin, which it says literally for sensitive skin, this is a disaster. It's such a basic error. I don't even understand what they were doing. So, if you're sensitive skin, guys, please avoid this product."

"This is a nice lightweight to mediumweight cream, and to me it's the definition of a fine moisturizer. It's so important to find the right texture for your skin type. If you are oily this might be too heavy, if you are dry this might be too light, but if you have a normal skin type this might be perfect. It does have essential oils, so if you have sensitive skin I'd skip it, though there is a fragrance free version too."

"First up is the Haruharu Wonder Black Rice 10% High Hyaluronic Acid Cream. It's a little bit of a mouthful, but this is such a gorgeous lightweight cream that is still so nourishing. Look at that texture, like that is so delicious. It's almost like if an essence and a moisturizer had a baby, it's this. I feel like so many times when people are looking for hydration and moisture, they're looking for really thick, heavy creams because they think that's what they need to lock everything in, and sometimes that is the case, but sometimes you can use a beautiful lightweight gel cream and achieve the same thing. This cream is so lightweight, which I think makes it extra lovely, especially if you have oily skin and you're really looking for something to help draw that hydration and plumpness to the skin, because you can have oily skin that is still dehydrated, so skin that's still lacking water even though it has plenty of oil. And I find that these lighter gel cream formulations tend to just look and feel better on the skin, so this is a nice option for you."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
